I was a bit disappointed with the coverage this year. I still wish that someone would explain that these are NOT ordinary, run-of-the-mill age groupers doing this race. I don't think the average viewer would get it that most peeps have to QUALIFY to do this race.

I agree. I thought they gave even less time to the special interest stories as well. It's like they highlight the BMX kid and then they barely update his progress over the day.

But, a lot of people see that and it opens the world of triathlon to them. At least it does that.

I thought they focused totally on the pros.  Was disappointed in the coverage of AG athletes and the special health consideration crew.  It's hard enough to KQ, but doing it with some of the challenges they face is doubly hard.

I did like the finish shots of a wide variety of people.  The smiles and other facial expressions really tell the story of why we do it-unexplainable to a non triathlete.

I also liked the fact that they pointed out how much the family has to give up or do to support an athlete through the process (though that would be another hour or more of interviews to cover that aspect fully )

I actually thought it was one of the best.  I liked the fact that they didn't spend too much time on the special interests.  Sure they gave us updates, but they spent the last 15minutes all on the AGers.

I just thought it was different than in past years.  It wasn't the same for sure, and I didn't enjoy it as much.  Oh well, I'm still glad they broadcast it.

It sure did get me pumped though for the training coming up. It always seems to do that for me. It will be perfect to throw this on in about 4 months!

So I made a date with my wife to watch this, so she can see what it is all about and what it takes to complete the race.  Well the opening intro did not help my wife much to accept me doing this race in the future.  We all it is tough, but not ideal for family viewing when they know you are trainng for one. That was rough opening scene.

I was a little suprised that Andy Potts didn't make the cut at all...I think they spent too much time on Stadler...I got it he's a 2xworld champion, but Potts placed 7th in his first IM, and did get a penalty. I think they spent too much time on the pros that had issues last year/past.  If said pros had come back to win, focus on it, but what about the other top guys in the field.  But, still, always fun to watch!

I like this year MUCH better than last year - they showed a lot more racing and did not drone on with all the special interest stories.

I was also surprised that Potts was not in at all - especially when they spent as long as they did on footage from last year (did I really need to see Stadler yorking?) and on Chrissie's flat....

PennState - 2008-12-13 5:23 PM I thought the coverage was great... I like that they focussed on the top pro's and not mainly on the special health issue people or AGers. They are good stories, but I like to see the best athletes in the world competing for 1st place.

Funny you say that because I was just thinking how much I enjoyed it becuase they didn't just limit the coverage to the pros.  The last two IM events I've watched on VS have focused entirely on the pros with only an "oh yeah, there are some AGers racing too" mention.

Two great acts of sportsmanship - one, the person who gave Crissie the CO2.  I wouldn't think twice about stopping to give someone a CO2...then again, I'm not trying to win the race either.

The other was the guy who delayed his finishline crossing to allow Crissie the spotlight.  Totally awesome.  What a great guy!

I liked this one more because it focused on the pros. If I was watching this with my family or I wanted to show a more emotional broadcast, I would put in last years airing.

And I believe the guy that finished right behind Crissie may have been the top AGer, someone from Germany.

They really need two shows. One focusing on the pros and one focusing on the agegroupers.
Pro athletes are amazing to watch. Chrissie Wellington amazes me everytime.
But the regular people are the ones that help you get up in the morning and train for your own race. They're the ones who help give you the confidence to say...Maybe I can too...

I'm all for 100% pro race...not really interested in ag stories. I want to see the battles and pain the pros are going through.

It does not bother me one bit about what the telecast focuses on may it be the Pros or AG. I'm just in awe of what these triathletes go through during this gruling event and how they pull themselves toghether to cross the finish line. There's one thing that i did notice this year than last was the fact that how many of the pros hit the wall but still got through it same goes for the AGers. There all winners to me even the ones that DNF, they gave it their best shot so i applaud them for their effort. Like macca said if it was easy everyone would do it.

It was a good production to put so much info in a short broadcast, however I have the following critiques.

I thought the pro coverage was so/so, with too much last year stuff. They had twent clips of Macca, then only showed his mechanical problems once. I guess they have to deal with what they have footage of and go with it, but they showed Stadler yacking enough last year.

I ran a bit during the Vineman 70.3 this year with Sean Swarner, one hell of a guy. I would have liked to seen more on him.

Dude has scaled Everest and finished this race in Kona in a 11:44 with one freaking lung.

Two time being terminally cancer stricken, and two times kicked its arse and lives to tell about it while doing things most can't even consider.

Also mentioning that most have to qualify in other Ironman events would be nice. And not even mentioning Potts was surprising, especially since I thought he blew everyone away on the swim.

They didn't show or mention the 35-year old Marine major who did the bike wearing his combat boots with cleats fitted, battle dress utility uniform, and wearing his issued kevlar helmet. Then for the run he changed into a fresh set of utilities and combat boots, and ran the whole thing. Finished in 13-14 hours.

1700+ athletes in an hour and a half; they can't show everyone.

I think a quick word on how the spotlighted athletes Kona qualified would be quite helpful. I'm curious about how an ex-baseball player, Jeff Conine, got in.

In general, I thought it was a pretty decent show.

DerekL - 2008-12-13 3:55 PM Another year of Al Trautwig butchering the name Torbjorn.

Maybe you could apply for his job next year.

I don't think it's too much to ask for him to learn to pronounce the name of one of the top finishers the last few years.

Well maybe you can enlighten us on the correct pronunciation of Torbjorn, because every other person I've heard pronounces it the same as Al Trautwig.

It's pronounced  Tor'-b-yorn'

And about the requests for digital copies of the broadcast - this comes up every year and although I'm not a copyright lawyer, methinks this is a bit of an infringement. Just sayin'.

I know that DVD "copies" were passed along and "shared" amongst some BTers, as I was a participant in that mailing and re-mailing.

It's simple.  It's the commonly heard and pronounced Bjorn with Tor in front of it.  He pronounces Bjorn Anderson's name just fine as I've heard him say it.  Adding three letters to the front of it apparently puts him into a brain lock.

Go listen again.  I've never heard anybody pronounce it like he does.

Regarding Potts, you have to remember that they only have so many camera crews, so they have to decide in advance who they're going to stay with. Last year, there was a ton of tape of Desiree Ficker, Natascha, and Normann who were non-factors and almost none of Chrissie Wellington and Craig Alexander. It would have been nice to see more of Andy but they can't follow everyone.

I bet that the amount of AG coverage vs Pro coverage in the telecast probably has a lot to do with whether they guess right and wind up having a lot of tape of the pro race leaders. This year, they got it right, so there wasn't much AG coverage, last year was the opposite.
