The new marketing manager wants me to add this to my email signature so my signature is consistent with everyone else in the office (all 4 of them)

I'm a self proclaimed tree hugging dirt worshiper, but I find this to be an annoying addition to emails. Who the hell prints emails anyway? I find it to be a self serving thing, like" look at how environmentally conscientious I am" type thing. Makes it look like you're trying too hard. Which the manager has always had a problem with. (She just started working there, but I've known her since college)

They must have gotten an e-mail from our office as we have had that on there for a while ....... but I work in an office full of greenies and our firm is one of the leading high performance building (hot term for Green buildings) design firms in our area.

graceful_dave - 2009-02-06 2:54 PM Who the hell prints emails anyway?

A LOT of people (mostly older folks) print emails. All emails. All day. They print them before reading, and then file them. Seriously. Sometimes it's because the computer screen hurts their eyes, and sometimes it's because they are worried about losing the email in their computer; they want a hard copy in case everything crashes and is lost.

I have this on the bottom of my email. A guy in my area came up to me a few months ago and said "I was just about to print this email and saw your signature note. I realized I really don't need to print it."

so when I do print the email as per requirements to keep a hard copy of our transactions, you are causing me to waste paper by printing this additional text?  maybe it could notify you if I do print and then you could call me to tell me I hate the Earth

My favorite link re: paper recycling (It's Penn & Teller...you decide if it's safe for work).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqATKjAe91E

I personally don't print out many emails (on a rare occassion I will, but I have to shred the stuff anyway because it has PHI on it, and I use it for scrap paper before doing so) but there was an HIM director I used to work with who printed out just about every email he ever got...and kept them all in his office.  If someone ever lit a match in there, the entire place would have gone up in smoke.  I have recently started seeing that tag line on some email signatures, though.

My companies external auditors have this in their signature, which is very ironic since they are the only one of the Big 4 accounting firms that don't have electronic files...  They are worried about me printing a 1-2 page e-mail while they go through 2 reams of paper a day for the past four months printing out their audit evidence and make several trips with a hand truck to haul their documentation out when they are done?!  And as I was leaving last night, one of their new hires was copying two 5" thick three-ring binders from last year to add to this year's file?!  WTF!!

We have to keep paper copies of charge numbers so those I print.  Otherwise only emails that I actually need info off of & travel information get printed.  However, I am horrible about printing documents because I can't stand reading it on the screen.  I stare at it 9 hours a day - reading is just asking for even worse eyesight.

Plus I get a lot of classified info via cd....I print all of these because a cd is fairly inconvienent when you have to go somewhere else to look at it.

My boss frequently sends me an e-mail, then prints it and brings me a copy. Don't ask me why that's necessary...I'm still trying to figure it out. I've also seen him bring a copy of e-mails I've sent him so he can ask me what I meant, or answer my question. Can that not be done via a reply e-mail? Maybe I should add the environment phrase to the bottom of my e-mails.

Actually, I think it is a great idea to only print things when absolutely necessary. I put 20 flyers up around the office to communicate this very message.

This thread is awesome.  I printed out 10 copies of it and put it all over the place, as a reminder to myself not to print things unnecessarily.

That's freaking funny.  I would love to know what/if he said if you added the line to your emails.

Used to work with a guy who had a driver-driver personality.  He would print his emails and read them while walking around the office.  He'd even take a few to read while using the bathroom...and yes...even for his standing up business.

Add a second tag line to yours that says, "This email just put 6 loggers out of work."
