Age Group Rank = 6/8
Pre-race routine:

Got up at an un-Godly 3:45 am to drive to the race. Was in the car at 4am.
Got there early. Had a fruit bar and 1/2 sandwich in the car. Had 2nd fruit bar about an hour or so before the race.
Event warmup:

Walked around to see where everything was. Went down to the water to see swim start and exit etc. Stretched. There were actually people jogging at 6 am...like that is going to help a 7:45 start.

Comments:

Pitiful. I had MAJOR wetsuit problems. It was my first time in a wetsuit. I jumped in the water before the start and it felt nice and floaty. When we started swimming I felt like I was Choking and I couldn't breathe. I have short legs and a long torso so I guess the suit is little short for me. I was miserable. Finally I flipped over and did some backstroke and undid the velcro at the neck. MUCH better. Oxygen is good. Once I got that done I felt like a torpedo in the suit and things fell into place. Unfortuantely it took me 2/3rds ont he swim to figure things out.

The water was shallow andpeople in front of me were standing up so I stand up and start to run oout, un zipping the suit and starting to take it of. Then Bloop I'm over my head...nice sandbar Now I have all kinds of water in the suit and it weighs like 3 tons. Luckily it drained out quickly.
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice in the wetsuit. I can do that starting April 1 when my pool re-ropens.
Transition 1

Comments:

Once again I am at a tri with a 1/4 mile run from swim exit to transition. These times are off my watch. It took me 2:30 to run from the swim exit to the entrace to T1. I hit the lap as I came out of the water and then again when I exited T1.

I REALLY struggled with getting the wetsuit off. I don't have any body glide yet and forgot to put on the creme I brought. Also it got stuck on the timing chip thing and my road ID I had on my ankle. AAGGRRHH

My original plan was to have my shoes on my bike elasticed up, but the transition area was in muddy grass and I didn't want to run in socks thru that so I took my shoes off the bike. This worked totally fine as you didn't have to run on pavement except for about 15 feet or so.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get body glide and practice getting the wetsuit off quickly

Comments:

The first part of the bike was great. The second part was rather scary. It was Church day in Sarasota and all the snowbirds were trying to go to church. The traffic was quite bad. The woman in front of me almost got hit by a car twice. During this partof the ride I was content to go a little slower and remain alive. There was no posssible way to pass anyone. The last 3 miles or so the road surface was terrible although and I went slower so as not to loose and teeth. The traffic wasn't was bad. The drivers were really quite rude honking horns at us and swearing at us.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing I was pretty happy with the bike. I could have pushed a little harder the last 2 miles but the road surface was poor.
Transition 2

Comments:

I did the riding with feet on shoes thing for the first time and it worked really well. I even remembered to take my hat, sweat band, water and goo. There woman who was about 1/2 mile in front of me on the bike and I blew past her in T2..took her about a 1/2 mile to pass me on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Comments:

I did Ok for me. (which is pitiful) I'm kind of bummed because 4/5 who beat me in my age group passed me on the run. actually EVERYONE passed me on the run (DFL). I felt like I maintained a consistant pace. I wasn't totally exhusted and I had enough to sprint to the finish to come in under 1:30. Leg didn't hurt too much and NO BLISTERS.I ate part of a goo as practice for At. Anthonys. That went OK, but it was sticky all over me and there were no trash recepticles or water stations. I put what I didn't get down in that handy tri pocket on the back of my shirt,

Thanks God I brought a little water bottle as there were NO water stations.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to run faster
Post race
Warm down:

Cleaned up my transistion area and packed things up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

1-Wetsuit problems
2-I suck at running (still)

Event comments:

I put in my rankings out of women. Overall 162/236, Swim 175/236 Bike 134/236 Run 219/236 (pitiful) If I could run I might be good at this.

Was disappointed that there was no water station on the run. Luckily it wasn't too hot. It was the first year they have done this race and they really need to either have it on a Saturday or control the traffic better. Post race massage was excellent.

Congrats on your first tri of the season! Can't belive you were up at 3:45 a.m. Crazy woman! Aren't you glad you got the wetsuit problems out of the way NOW, instead of dealing with it at St. A?? Anyways, glad you had a good experience all in all...

Sue, Congrats on your race. Thanks for providing details of your race; it helps a newbie like me know what works and what doesn't work.

It's shocking they didn't provide water. I was cycling Sunday morning (about an hour north of you) and much water was in order as our weather was fantastic but warm. The rude motorists sound unpleasant, too.

Would you do this race again?

well, it sounds as if you know what kinks you need to get worked out before your next race.  And it's easy stuff too, like Body Glide and practicing getting out of the wetsuit.  You do NOT suck at running, some people are just faster, and it's ok to hate them

Great race Sue, when's the next one?
