Nimble is not really a factor when you get plowed into while stopped at a stop sign, or t-boned becuase an idiot ran a red light. I'm going to put my family in the safest things I can...

Do your kids get made fun of wearing a helmet and full body suit to school and around town?

I understand what you are saying but you will lose if a mac or dump truck hits you, I disagree with the basis for your argument. One scenario you are safer, others you are more dangerous to yourself and everyone else.

05 suburban z71 - I. Love. It.

My wife drives an 05 Yukon

The third car is an 84 scrambler, with a ford 302.

We don't drive far, and I consider the annual difference in gas consumption as extra insurance if someone hits us.

That's a horrible analogy...

What is wrong with wanting a safe car? Do you go out and buy the 1 star crash rating car or the 5 star? And by your own admission the truck is safer than a smaller car.

Why should I feel bad about buying a safer car?

The only time I appreciate truck is when I need to haul something.  Even that, I never really need the power of V8.  I just haul a 2000lb trailer for 4 hrs on a 1.8L 4banger last weekend.  I was doing 65mph all the way.  It wasn't fun, but it get me from point A to B.  I don't haul it everyday so I can't justify myself for a V8 truck.

mr2tony - 2009-03-31 7:02 AM How many times have you HONESTLY been off-roading. When I used to have my ol' Jeep CJ5 we'd do lots of off-road and only a couple times did I actually see people out there in SUVs, and those were usually other Jeep products. Edit: I thought it said you could move up mountains, but now I reread to see it says you can MOVE mountains. My bad. I guess my theory is if you're going to waste gas, why not get a really fast car? SUVs are great to have to haul stuff (tri gear) but really, if I'm going to get 15 miles a gallon I best be in something that can do the 1/4 mile in less than 13.5 seconds.

Porsche. There is no substitute. 0 to 55 in 3 1/2 seconds.

Yeah if you want to spend $120K for the 911 Turbo. My MR2 was better in the corners, anyway, and was no slouch on the straights. And I only had $20K in it, including the purchase price!

My R6 go from 0-60 in 3 sec.  It can corner too.  And it give 40MPG.  And it is stock.  And it cost only $6k.

Let the trash talk begin

I disagree with the argument that a big car is safer. That is it.

You should not feel bad about the car you drive or the car you want. If you feel safer having your kids in a bigger car, put them in a bigger car/truck. You made your decision and I don't have an issue with it.

Trucks and SUVs are actually less safe than 90% of smaller cars today. Trucks are exempt from certain safety regultaions, and thus are not designed with the same crumple zones and energy-absorbing materials that a car has.

A truck is actually more dangerous to the occupants inside it for this reason. While the unibody and crumple zones of a car are absorbinh the energy of impact (and taking the damage instead of your body), you get bounced around worse in a truck/SUV.

I'll take my well-engineered, 15-year-old 3 series over most today.

I could be wrong but I thought I heard about a study where they found that trucks and SUV's have a higher rate of injury in an accident because they are more prone to rolling since they have a higher center of gravity.  So the injuries in an SUV tend to be more severe - especially paralysis from getting thrown around or ejcted from the vehicle.

I drive a 2000 Jeep Cherkoee Sport.  I'm approaching 200K miles.  It's paid off.  I use the trunk/back seat space for hauling my bike and hockey gear.  And I've got the 4 wheel drive...which is needed when you live in the north.

For me....having 4 wheel drive is a requirement.  I feel so much safer in my jeep while driving through snow compared to when my ex would take us out in his honda accord.  Plus, I don't have to worry about getting stuck at the bottom of someones icy driveway.  I've never been stuck anywhere with my jeep.

And... I feel more comfortable sitting up higher and being able to see around me easier.  I drive a lot of little rental cars when traveling for work and they can have some nasty blind spots.

IMHO....the reason SUV's and truck drivers have gotten a bad image is because they get a little too comfortable with the 4-wheel drive and begin to think it'll do anything.  I've seen quite a few of Ford Explorers speed by me, only to go into spinouts or into the snowy medians a few miles ahead....while I'm trucking along at a slower speed in the right lane.

I have a lifted 08 4x4 4-door Jeep Wrangler. It is not so good on gas 16-17 city, 20-22 hwy. Not sure how safe it is, but I am sure that once I pull the top open, take the windows out and all 4 doors off that any safety rating is less than a car or truck. But it is sooo much fun to drive, and yes, I take it off road. We go to places that most cant. We can get to a section of beach that has no one else around for miles. I can fit my bike in it and lock it to the roll bar for added security.  I pull our pop-up camper for family camping outings. It just does stuff that a small car can not do. I will take it any day over a small car. And it is sooooo much fun to drive!!!!
But thats just me.

Think of it as "stimulating" the economy at 15 mpg..

Whose economy? Saudi Arabia's or Venezuela's?

Oh I get it.. so I'm anti-patriotic becuase I consume gasoline. Right....but Democrats are not when they don't want to drill in the US... gotcha... The US government gets more $ per gallon than any foreign country.

WTF?????  In England, gas taxes are about $3.49/gallon.  In Germany, taxes are over $6/gallon for unleaded. In Canada it's about $.60/gallon and in the US its about $0.47/gallon (varies by state).

You really should check your facts.

You really should read the entire thread...

The government gets more money in taxes than any foreign country gets from the oil. The amount of money spent on the OIL in gasoline is small in comparison to the other costs.

problem is, people don't pay attention to the research that shows they are wrong.  They FEEL safer, therefore they must BE safer.  Truth matters not.

I've yet to see FACT one in this thread. All I've seen is people saying that trucks are not as safe.

So here is a FACT:

According to 2005 statistics collected by Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), very large sport utility vehicles, like the Dodge Durnago and the Chevrolet Suburban, have the lowest death rates on the road—about 24 occupants killed for every million registered vehicles no more than three years old. At the other end of the spectrum are mini cars, such as the Mini Cooper or the Toyota Yaris.

I feel pretty safe in my 4 star truck.

You have to remember the person behind the wheel is still in control of the car.  If they feel safer and are more comfortable driving a certain style car, they will probably BE a safer driver on the road in that car.  If they are uncomfortable driving a certain style car....they will probably be less safe driving that particular style car.

Here is a fact, it takes longer for a bigger vehicle to stop than a smaller vehicle. So when a kid runs out into the street from behind a parked car the kid has a better chance of not getting hit when he runs in front of a small car.

And to your original point you are more safer in your big care, I don't contest that as far as averages go the more steel you have around you the less chance you have of getting hurt.

You are 100% correct (well 80% as you are not taking into account the better ABS technology in newer, larger cars vs older smaller cars). Also red cars get pulled over for speeding more than black.

However neither of these has ANYTHING to do with the safety of the vehicle which is the topic originally currently being discussed.

I disagree, my point was that bigger cars are not safer to society. They are more likely to get into an accident than a small car and will do more damage to every vehicle that is smaller than it. That is not safer to me.

Semantics, but my argument was not in line with your orignal post.
