I read something recently about a foot race but I adapted to to an ironman as I think it really fits an IM:

"If you train for an ironman, race day will be your reward.  If you don't train, race day will be your punishment!"

So what's your favorite IM 'pearls of wisdom'?

"Got to keep swimming swimming swimming, just keep swimming swimming swimming, got to keep biking biking biking, just keep running running running. ....." (Dorry)

Or

Just 50 more miles to an ice cold coke, it's waiting for me in that tub of ice, has my name on it, is gona taste sooo good.

Or

Just one day at a time, hour, minute, second.... break it down until it is doable and then try to work it back up.

Or

If you go hard enough, long enough, you will come to the end of your self, emptied of your strength, your will, your spirit and there you will find God, faith will see you through.  (Well ya you have to train blooming hard too, and eat and drink enough and well pacing is not a bad idea.

I still have my IM 'v' card, but I love this one and think it's so appropriate for IMs:

Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.

Good one.  Similar to Robert Brownings':   “Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for?”

Another favorite of mine:

The one that carried me through the day, friend of mine said "No pressure, just enjoy the day."  Every time I started getting into "I'm too slow,"  "I'm getting passed," blah blah blah... No pressure, just enjoy the day

Just finished "No Shortcuts to The Top" by Ed Viesturs, it's about his goal of climbing the world's 14 highest peaks.  There quite a few correlations between what he does and IM as well as life.  In one chapter he covers when people ask him "why do you do it?" His simple answer is "If you have to ask, you'll never know." A longer answer "The challenge is both physical and mental.  If your body is willing, you mind can push it to do amazing things."  This rings so true when it comes to IM.

Personal experience at IMKY "I have TUMS at special needs, I can make it to special needs!"

I had the same state of mind.  I was just thinking it was more important to finish my first one, than risk blowing up and getting a DNF.  I kept thinking about how happy and proud I would be to finish and how devistated if I didn't so I raced my own race.

Ended up doing pretty good!

For me it was:

Get in the water on the morning of (insert race date). If I'm in the water, it means that I trained smart, prepared properly, and stayed injury free.

I made a sign with that on it and the race logo and it really helped me focus on getting to the race and being ready. Everything that happens after that is just the icing on the cake

I've yet to do an IM (in fact just training for my first HIM).  Last summer, though, I cycled coast to coast over nine weeks.  During the toughest stretches I could be heard muttering E-F-I... E-F-I, under my breath - - Every F'n Inch.  It was the only rule I had to follow, so it kept things simple.

A lot like a previous post, I remind myself I am doign this for fun.  I tell that to other people on the course.  By saying it out loud it helps.

In Europe they have beer in the finish tent.  And they take offense if you turn down the beer they thrust at you.  I had to be courteous and accept it, right?  You'd be amazed at the affect of one beer after crossing the finish line.

I can see that being true.

At my IM during the last 8 miles on the run I had to QUICKLY WALK AWAY (couldn't run) FROM negativity. Found this one girl from my city/state who had the same coach... but all she was doing was complaining about how miserable she was. Well honey, it's like mile 20 of a marathon and we are finishing in 16 hours.. we are ALL miserable... let's just stay positive and not complain about it.

The advice given to me was, "Stay positive". When I started having a rough day of it, I said outloud, "Stay positive!", over and over.

Shoot, if I just saw anyone who looked like they were miserable... I looked ahead and kept moving. It was a real buzz kill to see people puking on the side of the road (still upright and coherent, just sick).

Control the things you can, accept everything else.  Just finished CDA in the cold, wind and rain.  The weather didn't bother me at all - couldn't control it - and I was amazed at the relief I felt by not worrying about it.

Karen,
I learned this from MY coach during my first IM when I learned after the race that he had just beaten me to T2 but was so shell-shocked from the bike that he was in "a bad place"....he was very nice and did not make himself known to me as I got in, got my stuff and got out.......Negativity and a valid reason to sit still (shoes, socks, etc.) are a really brutal combo.....
