Total Time = 1h 32m 3s
Overall Rank = 51/150
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 10/29
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 6:00. Ate an orange, a little greek yogurt, and a little brown rice. Finished packing the truck and headed out at 6:30. Used portta-pottie, set up transition, got chip and body marked, one more trip to the pottie and put on wetsuit.
Event warmup:

Got in the water around 9:35 and swam 200-300 yds to warm-up.
Swim
  • 20m 15s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 28s / 100 yards
Comments:

I need to learn to swim in a straighter line, and sight better, but I was not intimidated by the swim. Just slow.
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing to go straighter and sight better.
Transition 1
  • 02m 28s
Comments:

Other than a little struggle with the wetsuit, this was pretty efficient.
What would you do differently?:

I should have sat down right away to take wetsuit off of legs rather than struggling on one foot.
Bike
  • 40m 28s
  • 12 miles
  • 17.79 mile/hr
Comments:

I used drops to reduce resistance at times. Traffic got bottled up a few times making it difficult to pass and difficult to stay out of drafting zones, but the crowds broke up eventually.
What would you do differently?:

I need to get aerobars on my bike.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
What would you do differently?:

I need to learn to take off shoes while still on the bike.
Run
  • 27m 22s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

Running after biking and swimming was very different than a regular 5K. I felt more "normal" in my pace and breathing in the second half. I poured water over my head to stay cool 2X.
What would you do differently?:

I need to practice some bricks to get more efficient in the start of my run.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a bunch of water and walked some before gathering equipment from the transition area.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being sick and lack of training over the past three weeks.

Event comments:

This race was a great introduction to open water swimming and a great first sprint for me. The only thing I would change was the fact that the run course went through the woods for a good bit at the start and finish. This limited my pace and the uneven ground was especially hard to deal with when I was so tired at that point.

Congratulations on a good performance in your first Sprint! You're hooked now, right? I'll tell you that aerobars and helmet definitely helped my bike time. Bricks will help with T2 as you assessed. Just started getting out of my shoes last year on the bike and that helped my T2 time. Takes a bit of practice, though. Good luck with the rest of your season!
