Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:45, ate a couple of donuts and drank a bottle of Infinit. Got my stuff and the family packed up and headed to the park.
Event warmup:

Got there at about 6:45. I thought that was early, but by the time we got there they were parking cars at the secondary lot a good ways up the road. After making the trek to transition, took the bike out for a few minutes, ran a loop around the lake, and got in the water for the remainder of time b/f the start. i've found that the more time i can spend in the water b/f the race, the better chance i have of not freaking on the swim.
Swim
  • 11m 2s
  • 656 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

10 seconds better than last year. this swim started horribly, but i managed to make it an average swim. i decided to start front/inside in my wave. i figured if i could hammer the first 100 yards i could create some space. not so. either my hammering is weak, or the other guys decided to do the same, b/c i was getting beat up all the way to the first buoy. i actually had to stop for a second right before the first buoy and swim to the outside b/c it was so congested. The back straight away was better except for the sun. The last buoy was ridiculous. there were caps of all colors in a log jam, so again i had to breast stroke around the outside. then it was hammer down to the swim exit.
What would you do differently?:

start and stay on the outside. i don't know why i thought i could swim in the middle of all that mess. Also, i need a new pair of goggles. or some anti fog spray. ultimately, i'm satisfied w/ the time b/c i don't swim much in training, so i can't really expect to break records at race time.
Transition 1
  • 01m 38s
Comments:

T1 time was better than last year. That's all i was looking for. My heartrate has always been high after the run to T1 from this swim, so my T1 time has never been great.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 31m 28s
  • 11.2 miles
  • 21.36 mile/hr
Comments:

this split was the most disappointing. i felt like my effort was steady and strong. i was a little weak on the hills, but i thought i crushed the flats. ultimately, i was 6 seconds slower than last year, and last year was on my road bike. i don't understand. i thought i was primed to make a run at sub 30. i know my bike training has suffered the past month or so b/c of IT band issues, but i thought i would have enough base built up to help me make it 11 measley miles. oh well, just something to fuel the training fires.
What would you do differently?:

train harder.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

not bad. i'd like for this one to be :45, but i'll take anything under 1:00.
Run
  • 24m 14s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

did about a minute better than last year. still getting better on the run, still a lot of room for improvement. this course is tough to gauge fitness, b/c as anyone who did the race will tell you, it is a tough azz run.
What would you do differently?:

not much. maybe throw in more brick runs into training.
Post race
Warm down:

got some cookies and water, and chatted with a few NAMC'ers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

training, or lack thereof. overall, i was about a minute faster than last year. i should be pleased, but i had it in my mind that i could go sub 1:08, and i just didn't execute.

Event comments:

4th year doing JT. always a well run race.

Nice, nice race!

The swim was definitely congested! lesson learned. I bet if you swim outside the buoys and us n00bs trying to hug them, you probably get a much better time.

Great time on the run and bike!

and congrats on the AG hardware!

Strong, strong start to the season.  I would not be too disappointed on this one.  2nd place in the first race should be a great compass for this seasons races.  Funny how everyone commented on the swim being a "bar fight".

By the way, never change your avatar!  I know you have had the same one for some time. I still laugh when I see it.

Good Race Brian.  I thought you had a nice swim even with the jousting going on.  Good to see you as usual.   Congrats on the 2nd place finish.

Thats an outrageous time for a Clydes.  I wish I could swim that fast without barely training!!  Keep up the good work.
