Total Time = 1h 39m 33s
Overall Rank = 213/254
Age Group = Clyde over 40
Age Group Rank = 10/13
Pre-race routine:

Got up early at 4:15 am. Drove to site. Ate two english muffins with peanut butter and a little honey on them. At site by 5:30. Had all sorts of time to set up! Racks were pre-assigned - no issue there. It was chilly so I kept sweats on most of the time.
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 06m 35s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started out fine. Girl in front of me was slower than I was, but I could not get past her. I rode on her heel every lap. Had to break the stroke a couple of times to hold up. Swim time was better than my goal, but not what it could have been. Should have been 30 sec to a minute faster. Despite the problem, it was my strongest sport today.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to put on burst of speed so that I can pass people better in a pool swim. Also, seed myself on the swim time better.
Transition 1
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

Not bad transition for no practice. Problem putting on socks. Couldn't find HR belt. Must have come off in pool.
What would you do differently?:

No socks on the bike. Practice with shoes already on the bike. Double check HR monitor strap.
Bike
  • 55m 20s
  • 14 miles
  • 15.18 mile/hr
Comments:

Not what I had hoped for on the ride. I did not get my gearing set up right in transition. Tried to get it straight at the mount line. Dropped the chain. Got it back on. Dropped it a second time before getting going. First leg of the route was uphill against the wind. Second leg was mostly uphill with cross winds. Finally got to some down hill sections after the halfway point. Felt better towards the end. Was ble to pick up the pace some. Some knowledge of the course would have been helpful
What would you do differently?:

Train more on hills. Push the pace harder. Set the gearing right for the exit from transition. Pre-ride courses whenever possible.
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Need to practice on this. Try running with no socks some.
What would you do differently?:

Practice
Run
  • 34m
  • 2.9 miles
  • 11m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

As expected. I was not fully ready for the run. Walk some, run some, repeat until done.
What would you do differently?:

Train. Train. Train. Watch water intake
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around. Had some liquids. Found my HR strap. It had ridden down around my waist with the race belt. Too funny!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training.

Event comments:

The race was nicely put on. They had pizza at the finish line, but it doesn't sound good at 10:00 in the morning.

There is another sprint fo the exact same distance at this venue in August. I will do it to check on progress. I hope to cut 10-15 min off my time.

It must be those big lats that pushed the HR strap down when you flexed.  Wink Great job beating your time goal, especially after dropping the chain 2x.  What a bumber!!!

Good job Andy, yeah having the chain in the wrong gear happens to the best of us.  Helps you remember to get it in the right gear for next time : )

Nice job!  Funny about your HR strap.  Maybe they should design one that would double up as a number belt.

Great race!  I've never done a pool swim, so I can't imagine how hard it would be to pass someone!  Congrats on beating your goal!  That is cool that you will be able to check your progress later in the summer.  And I agree, I would so have eaten the pizza!!
