Pre-race routine:

Got up 4:15am to hit the road and pick up George. Owe George a ton of thanks as he made it possible for me to attend my Daughter's College Graduation yesterday as he picked up my packet and dropped my bike off. Eat a bagel on the way with my exlarge cold coffee. Get on sight very early 5:45 and we were parked way up on the hill. Not too bad. Got body marked by Melissa. Got my bike uncovered, tires pumped and towel setup and gear covered. Only to discover my race numbers are still in my trunk back at the car. Then pulling out the packet and see I have the wrong body numbers. Back to Melissa to adjust :) Thanks
Event warmup:

Got my wetsuit on and just walked around so much going on. My late wave always me lots of time to hang out. Watched a few racers get pulled from the water.
Swim
  • 30m 24s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 51s / 100 yards
Comments:

Read on BT to position near shore and head stright at the turn bouy instead of the yellow markers. Came close to shore and hit weeds which might have freaked others but not Creek Boy.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing I was happy with
Transition 1
  • 04m 39s
Comments:

Little unstable getting out of the water, so walked up the hill to T1. Found rack easily and stripped without issue.
Under the weather conditions I walked up the slick slope out of T1 with Melissa's ducttape trick on my shoes. Then carefully clipped in.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing to improve except maybe practice
Bike
  • 1h 25m 8s
  • 25.48 miles
  • 17.96 mile/hr
Comments:

Had to take the course a little easy due to the rain slick conditions. Lost focus of my nutrition and hydration. Needed more Gatorade (untouched in the cage) Could not hammer the downhills as I had wanted so used extra energy going up faster to maintain my race goal. Could have hurt my run some.
Main focus was not to crash, DONE. Had an enjoyable ride as I passed 3 of my AG'ers.
What would you do differently?:

Change out the cassette to the 12-27 so I could climb more spinning instead of pushing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 20s
Comments:

Very happy with this. I have been practicing removing the feet from the shoes and then riding with them on top. Worked well on the downhill approach to the dismount line.
What would you do differently?:

NOTHING
Run
  • 1h 05m 6s

  • 10m 29s  min/mile
Comments:

I can't run and I proved it again. Was in good shape right up to here. My quads were on fire and I could never get relaxed. Walked way too much but the legs just never felt good but were improving due to hydration.
Too hard on the bike again??? Very frustrating and I have been having some great bricks so this is confusing me. Most bricks were done after easy rides so maybe I need to up the effort before the bricks.
Did negative split going out 34:02 3 miles, return 3.2 miles in 31:04. Could be the Gatorade finally got my body back.
What would you do differently?:

Need to figure out how hard to bike to save my legs for the run. URGH
Post race
Warm down:

Finished with a smile thru the chute. Got my medal (was that Chrissie?) then my chip off. George and Andy met me at the finishers chute as well as our favorite volunteer Melissa. George had a plate of food which looked good. So I found food at Annapolis Tri Club stand and walked to loosen my legs. Got back to transition and ran our gear back to the car. Only halfway back I discovered I had left my wetsuit in T and my crocs at the swim start. More walking to collect them both.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Should have taken the bike easier to reduce the lost in run? MAYBE after all I am a heavy old 50 yo who is just lucky to be able to this well.

Event comments:

Amazing how organized and well run this event is. Look forward to doing it again. Great Volunteers, course markings, well supported course hydration and neighborhood support, just AWESOME.

Will update the times when the final results are published. These are times from my Ironman Timex. Updated 05/18/09 Timex was close and so I have my T1 time.

This is a personal best for a Olympic distance by a mile. My only other event was 03:42:05

Good job!  That is a solid race on a tough day.  I agree about the wet bike ride.

Skip...err Creek Boy, congrats on a HUGE PR!!!  Knocking 35+ minutes off your time is a testament to the work you've been putting in.  Awesome.  Re: the run....wish I had some advice for you but I too struggled.  I usually run ok off the bike but Sunday was bad.  I got a gel in me along with some water around mile 2 and I think it had an impact.  My plan was to have one in that last stretch on the bike on 108.  However my stomach was a little queasy and I felt ok otherwise so I skipped it.  Like you, maybe I waited to long.  Who knows.
I'm sure that was Chrissie who gave you your medal!!.... and even if I'm not sure, I'll say I am.  :-)
I was happy to provide transport for your bike...it was easy!!  Sorry about the brake.Embarassed

Look forward to seeing you again soon.  And again, congratulations!!

A PR on the Columbia course in the rain is quite an accomplishment. Plus a negative split on the run! Nice work.

Great job Creek Boy   A PR is awesome!  Your negative split was by a huge margin so I'd say you figured out how to save some for the run
