Subject: What size foam roller to get? What brand?
I need to pick up a foam roller. 2 questions:
1) What size (diameter and length)? Not honestly sure why this matters
2) What brand. There seems to be some big price differences but I can't understand why some cost more than others. There must be something to it?

Um, I went to the running store and bought the only one they had. I don't remember the brand. It's a long white one. I've seen shorter ones too. The longer ones you can do more with (like whole-body stuff) but if you're just using it to roll out your ITB or something, the shorter ones would suffice, simply for storage reasons. I'm not sure that my roommates are thrilled about the long white foam column that lives behind the chair in the living room.

first one I bought was at Target for $23, red and it worked well.

http://www.target.com/White-Ultimate-Foam-Roller-DVD/dp/B0007W2FEU/sr=1-2/qid=1243348255/ref=sr_1_2/178-9158663-0525017?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=0&index=target&rh=k%3Afoam%20roller&page=1

after around 4-6 months of use (3 months of daily use) by two people, the stiffness was gone and it needed replacement.
at this point I bought TP therpay kit, much more expensive, but this will ast much much longer.

http://store.tptherapy.com/

Target FR is certainly a great option to see if you like the stretch and see if you will use it.

Thanks!

cusetri, how wide is the "quadballer". It looks really small in the pictures. Do you know how wide it measure end to end?

Get the longest one you have room for. I have the shorter one because it's all I have space for, but it's easier and you can do more with the 3-foot ones.

I bought the black foam one from performbetter.com. I used it at my PT's office and I like it because it's much harder than the white or blue foam ones. It hurts more, but that's sort of the point, and it doesn't get squashed down in the middle after you use it a lot.

I started with the foam roller too.  Then moved on to the TP Therapy stuff.  If you have any doubts go read the review that PennState wrote about this stuff.  I strongly recommend the TP Stuff as well and thing that it's much much better than a foam roller.

The smaller diameter rollers hurt more. I think mine is an 8" diameter; doesn't hurt too much. It's easier to stay on a 3 foot roller than a shorter roller.

Ah! So the diameter does make a difference then? How come smaller one's hurt more?

Short review on Trigger Point therapy. I would recommend it over a foam roller. More expensive, but much better.

Thank you so much for the review, great stuff. I am wondering how wide the quadballer is from wheel to wheel. Any estimation??

Not very.  I have a very hard time rolling my ITB's on that thing.  I much prefer my long foam roller to roll out the ITB's.

The quad baller is barely wide enough to fit your leg....

I would have to disagree on this.  no issue with enough room.  you may have to adjust more during certain manipulations to stay center, but nothing major.

^^^ I'm going to disagree. The footballer is small, but the quadballer is fine for the entire quad and ITB. It is MUCH more intense, but there is no problem with it working your leg... it's designed to do that.

X2 the quadballer is easily 12-16 inches long.     It's by far long enough even if you fall into the "larger" athlete category.

I started using a large coke bottle filled with water. That worked pretty well. After a while i got one of the 3 foot roller because its easier to move around on without having to reset.

I'm going to measure mine when I get home...pretty sure it's less than 12".....

Oh wait.  I forget how long you boys think 6" is.....

I think the smaller diameter means your weight is concentrated onto a smaller area of roller.

Thanks guys. Talked to them, they didn't have an exact measurement but they said they have 325 pound football players that use the quadballer.

Would love to hear the actual measurement.

Do you guys think the quadballer is the one worth getting, or should I get the other pieces (like a kit??)

Ok so I fibbed a bit.  From end to end the quadballer is 11 inches.  In any event plenty of space to roll out.....  Hope this helps.

I just logged in to say the same thing.  11 inches, 1 inch on each end of that is the hard plastic end pieces.  So, only 9 inches of rolling space.  I never could roll things like hamstrings without the hard plastic things hitting me in some less than comfortable places.

I will stick to my foam roller.

Thanks for grabbing the measurement. I must admit I'm a bit skeptical about the size. That seems small. Decisions, decisions....

I wonder if I can find a place to see it in person.
