Lake Mills Triathlon
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 16m 35s
Overall Rank = 73/595
Age Group = DonkeyClydes
Age Group Rank = 2/32
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:25, ate my usual on the drive to Lake Mills - M&M pancakes w/peanut butter, a banana, cup of coffee and some water. Stopped at the rest stop near Lake Mills to conduct a surprise inspection. Was surprised at how full the parking lot was by the time I gots to the race site at 5:40ish. Met up with DJDonkeyDaddy and Lunachick in the lot and jaw jacked on the way to transition. DJ wished me a happy anniversary - 1 year ago I met most of you goofballs that "make" me do things I would have never thought of doing before all in the name of fun and good times. Got a sweet transition spot (would have been better but BunnyT got there earlier than me) - they really treat the Clydes well here - the best transitions spots money can buy. Found lots of Donks and Donkettes and jaw jacked some more.
Event warmup:

Actually ran a whole 1/4 mile warm up, squeezed the lemon, and did 50 yds in the water.
Swim
  • 07m 25s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

This swim start was worse than my IM start. Arms and legs just a flappin and kicken everywhere. I start off on the outside and took off at a reasonable pace. I was really surprised at how hard people were going (it must be the first race of the season). It was a cluster@$#* until the first bouy, by the time I got 20 yds past the bouy there was no one. I think alot of people went out to hard and died by this time. Sighting was almost spot on, got caught in a log jam from the wave ahead of me but proceeded to duck and weave my way thru it. Remembered to swim farther up to shore this year and avoid the rocks I stepped on last year. 2 seconds faster than last year, not a big improvement but definitely moving in the right direction.
What would you do differently?:

Go out a wee bit faster to avoid the clusterage at the beginning.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Felt a lot slower than this. Decided not to put arm warmers on and decided not to go naked either as previously discussed before the race. Would still like to try going sockless and with shoes on the bike but didn't want to do anything new on race day. Improved by 9 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Practice, Practice, Practice
Bike
  • 44m 47s
  • 15.8 miles
  • 21.17 mile/hr
Comments:

My goal was to average over 21 mph - goal accomplished.
What would you do differently?:

Keep up the hill training and build up overall volume.
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

Had to sit down ot put on shoes because hips locked up getting off bike otherwis good T2. 24 seconds faster than last year
What would you do differently?:

Practice taking feet out of bike shoes before dismount, otherwise it was a pretty good transition for me.
Run
  • 21m 59s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Starting running and it felt like I was running on stumps. Couldn't feel my feet at all as they were quite frozen. Focused on fast feet turnover. Quads and hammies were tighter than they have ever been getting off the bike. Bike path was more conjested than Lomardi Ave. on a Sunday afternoon. Just focused on passing people, left, right, over, under, thru the ditch, however I could get by them. Reached the turnaround and picked the pace up, and gave what I had left the last 1/2 mile. Only got past by three people on the run (2 of them where barely old enough to have facial hair). There were Donkeys all over the bike course which ia always very cool. 15 second slower than last year.

What would you do differently?:

Overall, I was not very happy with this run. My goal for this year is too push myself as hard as I can on the bike and run and see where my breaking point is instead of trying to pace the race. In order to do that I need to change my approach to the runs in the shorter races. I tend to start at a steady pace and pick up the pace at each mile or so thru the race. I need to push a harder pace out of T2 and then try to hang on.
Post race
Warm down:

Found Terri and the chitlins who were kind enough to brave the elements and jock strap. Got a bottle of water and proceeded to try to drink it while the cap was still on, duh, my son even called me out on the slick move. Cheered in lots of donks.

Stopped at Arby's for a little snackage with DJ, PJ, LunaJ, RJ, AJ, Terri and Holly.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Pushing myself to that last little bit (going to need to do that if I want to accomplish the last goal on my list this year)

Event comments:

So I took 2nd place in Clydes this year. As I was walking up to get my hardward, the Uecker section started yelling "step on a scale, step on a scale" Though it was quite humurous. The first place guy was smaller than me and got the same remarks. I did step on the scale when I got home - 202.5 lbs thank you very much.

Course: Decided before the race I wanted to hammer the bike fairly good and hope I had something left for the run. This course seemed a little more difficult. Got passed by 2 people form my age group within a mile out of T1,otherwise I was trying to pass as many people as I could find and there were lots of them. I was in wave 9 behind all the elites, male & female novice and age group males. Wasn't too bad except for the occassional hyrbird or MTB in the left part of the lane. Saw several packs of drafters (most of who should no better - i.e. not newbies). At sometime it began to rain and the wind picked up - AH!! Made me feel right at home. (I figured Joe must have jumped on his bike for a little training ride about this time). Wind was in my face for the last three miles but I was able to keep the pace up thanks to all that crazy hill riding and windage this spring. Time was slower than last year but pace was 0.50+ mph faster. 2 gels and 16oz of water.

Congrats and great to see you, as always.  That was a great race and you described how my legs felt to a T after T2.

Great job on getting to the podium.  I also laughed when the announcer said that, and then the next dude came up looking even smaller.  Of course, taller fit people just look like they way less...but humorous anyway.
