Athletes,

I wanted to make you aware of an event that my friend Elizabeth at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta is doing to raise money to reduce Georgia's childhood obesity epidemic. The event is also being staged to create interest, enthusiasm and excitement surrounding the announcement of the Tour de Georgia's possible 2010 return.

BTH is a two-day multisport event with activities that meet expert, advanced and beginner skill levels.  It's designed to be fun and challenging for all - info at http://www.beattheheatga.com/

The key event is on Sunday, July 19 - a 100k bike ride starting at Falling Waters in Ellijay and finishing with the Tour de Georgia iconic climb up Brasstown Bald.  When you reach the top,  there will be a Tour de France viewing party with food, beverages and cycling celebs

If some riders can't do the ride, they can still show up on the side of the mountain to cheer everyone else on and enjoy the party.  The more packed the mountain is, the more organizers and sponsors will realize how much the Tour means to the fans AND the more attention is brought to the issue of Childhood Obesity.

Thanks.
JC

Awesome race ... and timely given that there are not many first tier cycling events in July.

I am thinking about signing up for the Falling Waters to Brasstown ride - and others interested?  Would be nice to get a group together that can then work as a team to the base of Brasstown ... and then it is an individual effort to get to the top.

I may be up for it.  I have been wanting to do Brasstown Bald again.  The time that I did it I did not know what to expect.  It always helps when you KNOW how long that steep grade goes on.  It just so happens that there was a portapotty set up about 3/5 of the way up the "wall" and I stopped for a couple of minutes even though I did not really have to "go".    I would like to do it again without stopping.  Maybe we could get Doug to do it on his tri bike like he did Hogpen.  I would like to see that

$175 is kind of pricey though even though it goes to a good cause and you get a Hincapie Jersey which just happens to be my best jersey.

Maybe we could get Doug to do it on his tri bike like he did Hogpen.  I would like to see that... that would probably be the bump that would make it worth $175.

LOL!

I was reading it and thinking "I wonder if I could get up Brasstown on my tribike?"  I'm almost stupid enough to try, but I'll do Chattanooga Oly or the Hospitality ride because they cost less.

Yeah, the price tag is bit steep ... but the course as well as the jersey and cause kind of make it worth it.

Rumor has it that the event will move to the end of the season instead of in the heat of the season.  That should make the ride more palatable to some as going up Brasstown in the heat of the day after riding for 50+ miles might be a little muchh ..

This has made its way into the Pro Ranks. Christian Vande Velde of Garmin-Slipstream sent out a tweet about it yesterday. He and a lot of the other US pros are hoping that the Tour de Georgia comes back next year. I would expect to see a few of them here in the fall to support the ride.

Glad they changed the date, makes it doable for me now. It did get some major tweet cred with vandevelde too.
