Total Time = 3h 27m 45s
Overall Rank = 2700/?4000
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 122/143
Pre-race routine:

Saturday night: BT Pasta dinner. Great food, great company. Slept not so well, kept waking up. Finally up for good at about 5:15am.
Event warmup:

Walked over to race area from hotel was a warmup in itself :) Then walk through the HUGE transistion area. Walk back out. Walk the mile or so to the swim start. See, lots of walking was my warm up.
Swim
  • 36m 48s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 27s / 100 meters
Comments:

I always finish strong in the swim part. I just fell apart here. Thinking back, it was my most competetive swim to date. Lots of thrashing, kicking, etc. I just got slammed. I wasn't really used to it, and every time I got hit I'd stop and recoup. I need to work on stopping that. Plus that wore me out quickly. I tried to relax. Then the folks in the wave behind me passing didn't do anything to help me either.
What would you do differently?:

More OW swims in rough water. Need to go on group OW swims- I'm too used to the pool and calmer OW swims. Work on balance drills.
Transition 1
  • 03m 21s
Comments:

Struggled with wetsuit, cursed by being a left hander. Slippery bike start.
What would you do differently?:

Practice unzipping wetsuit, probably won't get to do that much living in Florida :)
Bike
  • 1h 31m 24s
  • 40 kms
  • 26.26 km/hr
Comments:

Good ride even with the wind. I did good- hydrated, got the gels down. It was hard to pass sometimes and got crowded in parts. Every time the marshal drove by, I was alone. whew!
What would you do differently?:

Go faster. duh.
Transition 2
  • 02m 59s
Comments:

While on the bike, my triceps started bothering me. Couldn't see any blood, but it was stinging. Figured it was either a jellyfish or wetsuit burn. I started to leave T2 but decided to go through my bag, slather some vaseline on it. Thanking myself for throwing that in my T bag as an afterthought.
What would you do differently?:

Put the tube of vaseline in my T area. Learn to dismount better, Im so awkward at that in bike shoes.
Run
  • 73m 15s
  • 10 kms
  • 07m 19s  min/km
Comments:

Oh, I was SO HAPPY I didn't cramp. No legs, no side stitches. Wow. Saw G8RSAX (Wendy) and hung with her for a while. Jeez, the purple people are fast. Walked water stations. About mile 3, I got my groove and picked up the pace. A lot. I was happy I was having a great run, considering I've never done a formal 10K run previously. Saw hubby near the end and sprinted down the chute. Had the chute all to myself, so I should have a great finisher's pic
Post race
Warm down:

walk around with cold wet towel. ohhh... Gatorade and water. Food!! Fruit, pizza, and eventually beer and Champagne.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

my run sucks. I tend to walk too much. Must.... stop....walking.....

Event comments:

This was my first OLY. Basically pacing myself. Not bad, beat my personal goal of 3.5 hours by three minutes.

Course: Damn, this was windy and I tipped a few times. It was rough, I was doing anywhere from 11 to 24mph at times. I've never shifted so much. Got passed a LOT, but was just pacing myself for my first OLY. Not bad. Cops did great on course control, even stopping a jeep that got scary close to me. There was an accident out on the course- 2 cyclists apparentely ran into a little girl. The paramedics rolled up right next to me as I passed by the scene.

Great job on your first oly Lucy!

You have it set as 7 min KM for a 10k race, not 7 min miles.

Christine your whole race looked awesome! You never really get used to being kicked, elbowed and knee'd in an open water swim!  Great job.

Congrats on your first OLY Christine!!!  You rock!  I sure hope that you're doing this again next year!  Hopefully wind won't be quite so nasty and the water a bit on the calmer side.
