Subject: Any tricks to prevent rear-rack bottle launching?
I managed to eject and lose another bottle from my X-lab rear hydration rack today. It seems that every time I hit a bump, the bottles start making their way out of the rear bottle cages. I have the cages pretty tight (they're adjustable), and if I make them any tighter, it's nearly impossible to pull the bottle out.

Interestingly, my front tube bottle NEVER ejects. Ever.

Are there any tricks for preventing these ejections after hitting big bumps? I've heard something about rubber bands, but am not sure where to put them.

Mountain bike cages seem to hold them better.

Sounds weird, but my Cervelo P2c has no seat-tube bottle mount. Only one downtube mount. So I can't do two bottles in the "A" of the frame, and an aerodrink.

I dumped my X-lab rear rack for the same reason.  I now use a Profile Design rear rack and no ejections yet.

My water bottle configuration is 1 frame mount, 2 rear mount and 1 on the aero bar for drinking.  I have used the aero bar idea for a couple of years now but I just rest it on the bars.  So I’ll remove a bottle from the rear rack after I get going and place it on the aero bars.  I am pretty good at keeping it there and only drop 1 bottle during training.  I don’t use the rear rack for sprints and remove it.  Next week I'll configure bottle a rack on the aero bar so it's more secure and then test it out.

I've used my rear mounted Profile Design well over a year now and it has never thrown a bottle. I use my aero Profile Design for racing and the rear one for training rides and centuries.

Unfortunately, the profile design aquarack doesn't fit on the aero seatpost of the Cervelo P2C. This is the main reason I went with the Xlab - it was the ONLY thing that fit on my bike.

You might give this a try:
http://www.trisports.com/beaker-concepts-h-5c-rear-hydration-system.html

Its the only other rear hydration system I have found for my P2C.  I had the Xlab first, had the same problem with bottle ejects in two consecutive races.  With the beaker concepts, I haven't had any ejects.  Could be coincidence, but it seems to be working better.

Ok so hot long rides in unpopulated areas with no water for 100 miles = neverreach on back attached to frame never launches (64 oz) down tube only have one (24 oz), podium 2 chamber bottle 1 for nutrition (28 oz) and one for extra water (18 oz), usually gets me by.  If that dosen't do it there is the 100 oz camelback to add to it.  For races, can go with areo type  2 chamber bottle and use the downtube to hold a bottle if I need to before I toss it to get a refil.

PennState - 2009-06-20 3:38 PM I know it will sound stupid, but how about not using rear-mounted bottle holders. You can get 2 on the frame and 1 on the aerobars. The rear-mounted ones are not that aero, and endanger others. Just a thought.

Damn...thought I'd be the first in with this snarky astute comment.

My frame also only has one water cage, and my new bars are not aero drink friendly..  I just scoot back on my seat a bit so my butt is touching the bottles and that works well..    I've also will a 100 oz camelback and can get away with not using the back bottles as much

bachorb - 2009-06-20 7:43 PM Duct tape - wrap it around the bottles. They will never jet after you do that, I promise!

I'll try the duct tape thing - but how the heck does that work? Does it just make the whole thing devilishly difficult to pull out of the cage by making it thicker? Or is there something grippy about the duct tape surface? (Seems like it would be more slippery, if anything.)

I've launched a ton of bottles from the Profile rear cages and broken 2 sets of them within the last 6 months. Not a fan of Profile.

I do like the duct tape idea. Bottles are smooth. Duct tape is textured. Sounds good.

A rubber band looped on itself and then over the nozzle of the bottle's worked for me for months now, including an HIM. I only have one bottle attachment point on the frame too.
