Subject: Sunscreen???
I have my first HIM next weekend and I'm concerned about what to do about suncreen.  Do you put it on before the wetsuit or take the time in T1 to put it on?

Don't know about pre/post wetsuit.  But I work outdoors and sweat a ton basically for 7-8hours a day and the Coppertone Sport works great.  Which is the sunblock commercial featuring a triathlon.

From what I understand you should do it post body marking but pre-race.  Personally, even if I planned to do it in T1 I'd forget.

I personally put on a waterproof type sunblock before the swim and also have a small travel size sunblock spray on the bike. I'll spray as needed while I'm riding.

If this is an official IM sponsored 1/2, there should be volunteers to apply sunblock on for you in the change tent at t1 and when you exit t1.

There should also be sunblock at the aid stations on your bike leg.

I use Bullfrog in a little pump-spray bottle before the race.

Don't put it on your face until after the swim - it can stop you getting a good seal on your goggles.

I usually spray it on post body-marking.  Even if I was planning to put it on during transition, I think I would probably forget.

Some of the HIM do have volunteers to put it on for you in transition.  Which race are you doing?

I am going to do the Buffalo Springs HIM (Hopefully).  I'm heading out right now to find out how my swim is doing.

Use spray sunscreen in T1 and T2.

I also carry a sun block stick and I can apply it on my face while I'm riding my bike.

Negative.
Do NOT count on this, unless it specifically says it in your race instructions.
There was no such thing at Ironman 70.3 Kansas this year or last. Which is an "official IM sponsored 1/2"
(also there are no change tents in 99% of 70.3s)

I sunscreen after being body marked, before the race. I use a cream-style SPF 44, some sport forumla I bought at my local running store (water proof, sweat proof, sand proof, etc.). The spray on ones work for some, but I can't get them to cover me very well. Plus if you spray it directly on your body marking, it will bleed and disappear.

I use spray sunscreen also.  That way if I want to reapply in transition it is quick and easy.

"Daily Sunscreen
Sunscreen should be applied daily. The daily use of a low-SPF sunscreen (15) has been shown to be more effective in preventing skin damage than the intermittent use of a higher SPF sunscreen."

I am a golf professional.  I am in the sun for some part of every day during the summer.  From Mar 1 through Nov 15, I apply sunscreen after I shave.

I think it depends on how badly you burn and if you are in contention for winning or being really competitive within your age group.  I burn extremely badly and still have scarred burns from Lonestar at the beginning of april in a couple of spots that I missed with sunscreen.  I will be at Buffalo Springs next week and will put sunscreen on rub in sunscreen pre-race and spray sunscreen in both T1 and T2.  I will happily take the extra minute in each transition to not be miserable for the next week.  So I think it is a personal thing.  I use the coppertone sport spf 50 spray.

I'm quoting myself.  This is really important for people who burn easily.  What happens through DAILY use, you actually raise your skin's resistance to burning.  No worries about missing a spot for one day.  Just make it a part of your daily routine.  I never re-apply.  Just every morning, after I shower and shave.  Make sure that you get your back done by someone who loves you.
