I get a big smile every time I see that photo with the "Who's yer daddy!" Great choice for an avator. I was fortunate to attend that game in KC and it was a blast. Enjoy the show!

Was anyone else utterly embarrassed by the segment on the Bachelorette guy?

Other than the bachelorette guy, the show was amazing. I actually had tears running down my face as the woman with 1 leg missed the bike cutt off by 15 minutes.

Yeah, the bachelorette guy got an inordinate amount of air time. Don't really understand. Guess you ahve to follow the show.

Thank god the guy who got into the bike accident finished. If both he AND the girl with one leg hadn't finished, I think I would have been in tears.

But then I realized if his bike hadn't crashed he never would have made it into the broadcast, so in that way it was strangely fortunate for him.

I am still trying to understand how Ryan Sutter (Mr. Bachelorette) got in.  If I understand it correctly, one has to qualify for Kona much the same way one qualifies for Boston.  Also, there's a lottery for IM Kona, right?  I guess he could have "won the lottery" and gotten in that way.  I hope that's the case.

Unfortunately, the suspicious nature in me smells a PR set-up and he was given the chance because of his "celebrity."  Which, in my mind, cheapens the whole thing.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's cool that he completed the Ironman; can't take anything away from him.  But, why did it have to be Kona?  Why not Coeur d'Alene or Florida or Arizona or some other IM?

The segment on Sarah and another segment are up for "Emmy's???"

Toronto Girl- No, Sarah missed the bike cutoff by 15 min. She threw up 18 times on the bike and she had no energy.

Sarah is training for Hawaii as hard as anyone can train for one. She won't miss the cutoff again this year.

Hawkeye- I believe they gave Ryan an exeption or at least gave him priorty on the lottery spot. I think he should have had to qualify, but his time was very respectable. He has been around here doing some of the local races. I still think he should have earned it.

First of all, Thanks to Ryan for putting this thread up. I was beside myself when I missed it the first time around and I'm so pleased I was able to catch the re-air.

I too agree that the coverage Ryan Sutter got was over the top. Don't get me wrong, I have respect for him. Hell, I can't swim 2.4 miles, can't ride 112, and can't run a marathon and I'm not talking about all in one day either. But, to give him coverage because he was on a reality TV show??? Come on! And, to make it worse, why did they have to show her and give her feelings on the matter? I would have much preferred hearing about someone else.

On another note, man did I cry when the woman with the prosthetic leg didn't make the bike cutoff. That was tragic. And boy was I happy to see Chris Sadowski, the guy that got hit by the motorcycle, finish. (In his own words: http://tricolumbia.org/the_true_ironman.html)

One last comment... It's really too bad that Natascha Badmann didn't get to celebrate her victory at the finish line!

Cheers,
Rob

Yeah, mostly PR, "at the invitation of race organizers." Here's an article that touches on it:

Another celebrity was there at Kona. Deena Bennett (CBS Survivor Amazon) . Article in the Seattle City Sports monthly talked about it. She finished 16:05: and some seconds.

After some quick research, I saw that she had done a Half Ironman down in California. 8 Hour time.

As much as the sap on Ryan bugged me, at least he was a competitor that finished the race in a respectable time. And he was raising money for some cause (firefighters or something).

The thing that bugged me the most was all the coverage his dumb bimbo wife got. She didn't do crap besides hand out water. And those annoying women in the salon? Come on!

After watching that segment, I was kind of glad that the first airing was shortened, because that's one of the segments that got cut.

I didn't know she missed the cutoff!   Coredump brought up the fact when we raced last weekend....Can you imagine doing 1 leg drills for 112 freaking miles.  I have enough problems doing them for 1 min.  If I had 1 tenth the heart that she does, I'd be unstoppable.

Its kind of like being on Extreme Makeover Home Edition.  Its great that someone who has suffered gets the attention of America.  Unfortunately, to get that attention, one has to pay a very dear price.

That poor guy had cameras on him the whole rest of the race.  Talk about pressure to go along with the blisters from walking 7 miles on hot pavement in your socks with the bike.  He got on through a lottery slot.  Funny how you hear complaints from some segments of the elites on how the lottery "cheapens" the Kona experience and prestige.  He's a true Ironman just as much as the other competitors are.

Yep, they always have a few "high profile" spots the give away.  About 5-6 years ago a girl from Baywatch did Kona too.  Same premise.

I think it's great for the sport.  People that don't watch it, will with these folks doing the race.

You still gotta finish in <17hrs if your a celebrity or if your an elite or a pro.

Does anyone know how those two kids from New Zealand(?) are doing?  Their mom was racing to raise money and awareness of their disease, cystic fibrosis.  I think her name was Sarah and the kids were Cameron and Makena.   They were such sweet kids, my heart really went out to that lady.

During the Ryan Sutter piece, what was with the Beauty Salon gals talking about him and the Ironman?

I would rather have seen something about Norman Stadlers barber or more triathlon informative.

I didn't watch the first half of the show today, but from what I read they showed a lot more of "Mr. Bachelorette" that was cut from the original airing in November. (The original showing was 20 minutes shorter due to a long NASCAR race.)

I didn't have a problem with Ryan Sutter being there. He did NOT take a spot away from anyone (He had either a sponser slot or a reversed celebrity slot.)  He did finish in a respectable time and he appeared to train hard.

I still get choked up watch the guy with the damaged bike walk 7 miles in his socks just to be able to start the marathon.

Still fun to watch!

I don't understand the reference to the beauty salon gals period. Weren't they from NY or NJ? And isn't sutter from Colardo?

I wonder what the cycling pace was for Sarah. I tried finding race results on ironmanlive.com like you can for other races, even going back a few years. Does anyone know if they are published on the 'net?
