Veteran 840 | Subject: RE: Ditched the headphones while running I always train with music. It helps the time to pass and you can't relax when Frankie Goes to Hollywood tells you to. That song will get the heart going at any pace. But I ditch them 1 to 2 weeks out from an event. To deaden the shock. There are times out in the country when I turn it off and listen to the road sounds along with the birds and critters. |

IMHO. What is worse than running with headphones is cycling with head phones, and the only thing worse than that is swimming with headphones. If you want to pay attention to form, ditch the music. If you are putting in mindless miles try Nickelback. I love running with my ipod and after reading this I think I'll add it to my cycling and swimming. Thanks for the ideas! |

After ten years of it, there's no reason to change my form. Effort is ingrained as well, all it takes is a glance at the Garmin every couple minutes to verify. None of which takes a whole lot of thought. Guess others can't multitask as well. |

Master 1678 Olney, MD | Subject: RE: Ditched the headphones while running I'm about 50/50. If I feel like wearing headphones, I wear them. Listening to music certainly doesn't hinder by ability to focus or maintain form. It's just running! Easy, moderate, hard... glance at my Garmin every now and then to make sure I'm on track. Not sure how listening to music would interfere with my focus or form. I've never worn headphones while racing and I've never missed them. |

Science Nerd 28760 Redwood City, California | Subject: RE: Ditched the headphones while running I used to train with my iPod, but don't anymore. Mostly because I have yet to find headphones that are comfortable for me while I am running. I also don't think I'm missing out on anything and haven't bothered to find ones i like. I'm used to running without them. I do sing to myself sometimes. |

If you can't run without it, then you cannot race in a USAT event without breaking the rules and risking disqualification. |

Regular 288 Doylestown, PA | Subject: RE: Ditched the headphones while running Although I always prefer practicing (re: training) in as close to gameday situations, I find it excrutiating to go out for a 90 minute run after a 12 hour work day. There was a post earlier in this thread which highlighted the use of an ipod for non-music updates - podcasts in particular. I tend to go this route as opposed to music (kill 2 birds with one stone) but do still tend to zone out and lose concentration on both the running and the podcast. It sure makes the running easier, but I'm also well aware its not making me as "trained" as if I ditched the distractor. And I'm fine with that... |

Subject: RE: Ditched the headphones while running Eh, sometimes I wear it, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I want to and pick up the ipod and the battery's dead, so I go without. No biggie either way. I've even taken it on long runs and then, near the end, I just get sick of it and turn it off. What I don't understand is people that can listen to podcasts while running. Talking? OK, why doesn't Chrome actually show paragraphs |

Regular 60 Tampa, FL | Subject: RE: Ditched the headphones while running I always run with my Ipod. Unless it's a race or I am simulating race conditions. I don't see it as a big deal. I run for recreation as well. Nothing is more relaxing than zoning out to music on a long hot run in FL. Besides, there's nothing preventing you from running with proper form while also listening to music. I also use my Ipod on my solo rides on a 40-mile paved trail. I have had zero issues with safety. There's no car traffic because it's a trail, I ride all the way to the right and don't zig-zag, still call out "on your left" when passing and make sure to look around (especially near the trailheads since that is where all the people are). For road riding or group riding, I would never use my Ipod. |

Master 1704 Charlotte | Subject: RE: Ditched the headphones while running I guess I am with the minority then. Headphones on 100% of training runs unless the iPod is dead and then I just cry. I still find it hard to believe that folks can't concentrate on running while listening to music. Headphones don't dictate how slow or fast I run, they just keep me from being bored. My watch dictates how fast I run |

Veteran 427 | Subject: RE: Ditched the headphones while running meblack - 2009-07-08 12:28 AM Running with music in no way, shape or form hinders my ability to focus or maintain form. It probably actually helps me focus more and motivates me to keep running...running for an hour is not easy...I can run without music at races because there is tons of things going on to keep you entertained and the environment is awesome. If I run without my music on my regular running route all I'm going to think about it is how effinn hot and miserable it is outside and why I'm running in 110 degree heat right now and how i've only ran for 10 min and I've have what....50 minutes to go....FML. +1......I absolutely enjoy listening to music while running and that enjoyment leads to better training runs, motivation, confidence, etc. Come race day there are so many other things going on to keep the enjoyment factor up and no music is required. I do, however, need to find a decent pair of headphones since I seem to go through them every 3-4 months. Too much sweatin' going on.... |
