I thought this was an interesting article.  I'm not much of one for taking supplements, though.  Has anybody tried this leading up to a race?  The article says nothing about impact on already active people.

So is this subject taboo, or did everyone just quietly order up a couple bottles of Quercetin supplements.

I found the article interesting.  It was a very small study, however.  Look forward to the follow up studies.

"Despite these indications of possible health benefits, quercetin has neither been confirmed as a specific therapeutic for any condition nor has it been approved by any regulatory agency. In fact, bioavailability studies show that ingested quercetin is extensively metabolized into non-active phenolic acids, with more than 96% of the ingested amount excreted within 72 hours, indicating actual physiological roles, if they exist, involve quercetin in only minute amounts."

hehe, excreted

"...a study by researchers at the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health shows that the powerful antioxidant/anti-inflammatory compound found in fruits and vegetables significantly boosts endurance capacity and maximal oxygen capacity (VO2max) in healthy, active but untrained men and women."

Intriguing study in that anything that claims to increase your endurance and VO2max bears a deeper look ... but note that the subjects used were active but not athletes.  Wonder what the effect would be on those who have already reaped the early fitness gains of increased athletic activity?

12 people in the study? This is science really? Did they ask any of the important questions like are the effects permanent or temporary? I bet the DOD payed through the teeth for this study too... But put it in a pill and i'll take it.

Some articles mention taking combinations of quercetin and bromelain (from pineapple stems - yum) for increased absorption.  I guess I am a skeptical person when it comes down to believing all the claims made to push things like this.  On the other hand, I've swallowed plenty of prescription medicine in my lifetime with absolutely no idea what was really in any of it, either, other than the meds had passed muster with the FDA based upon some non-biased, industry-sponsored research.

I guess if I suddenly win a Kona slot next spring by knocking eighty minutes off of my previous HIM time, everyone here will know I've turned into a quercetin junky.

LOL, man, that wasn't up there for 60 seconds -- you don't miss a thing.   Michael J. and I were in the same Rx drug-of-month club.

Here is an article on quercetin.  When you are through reading it you can pull the 55 studies cited at the end and have fun.  Happy reading!
