Comments:

About my swim: In the words of the very funny Skipper from the Penguins of Madagascar, "That is ridiculous." My first 100 was pretty fast (for me) then I slowed but come on 2:45 100s in a freakin' 300m pool swim with everything else I have done this year.

This event was not able to provide split times but I eagerlly looked at my watch when popping out of the pool and saw 8:15. I was so bitter BUT determined to go faster on the other parts of my race. I had a goal time in mind to try and podium so I was now down 45 seconds. &@#%*@!!!!
What would you do differently?:

I AM getting private swim lessons over the winter to prep for the Lonestar HIM. I will be faster.
Transition 1
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

I have no idea what this time was but I ran (ran) to my bike and got my stuff together than ran to the mount line. I was not winded and very pleased w/ my transition. Also took a fews seconds to eat a gel and take in some water. My only food/water of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing - although I need tri shoes. My bike shoes are too complicated and slow for quick transitions.
Bike
  • 36m 42s
  • 11.5 miles
  • 18.80 mile/hr
Comments:

This is a really fun, easy bike w/ just enough of a challenge to make you work but not too much so you have to spend a lot of time recovering.

I really pushed as hard as I could not backing down when the legs burned. I was very happy w/ my bike although I wanted to be a little faster. However, it's all an estimate. I never hit the lap button on my watch so I saw my watch out of the pool then heading out on the run where I saw 47 min.
What would you do differently?:

Just keep getting more miles on the bike and more TT and intervals to get stronger so I can add more speed to my bike portion.
Transition 2
  • 00m 46s
Comments:

This T felt super fast. I was very pleased. Again ruan through it and was not winded.
What would you do differently?:

Get zip laces back on my shoes.
Run
  • 26m 46s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

A good run - my legs lossened up by mile 1.5. I settled into a fast shuffle until they felt good then opend up my stride and tried to pick up my pace. I kept telling myself to keep going and saved my last effort for the final quarter of a mile. I had a strong finish kick.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around w/ Tony and waited for Karla to finish. Then we got some food and went back to the hotel to shower. We returned to wait for awards. Karla won her AG and I was 3rd in mine. Tony had some ringers in his group and finished 4th even though he was 5 min. faster than last year.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I was a little burnt out mentally after Mooseman and already thinking about OBX marathon training. So I had trouble getting in my short, tough workouts esp. at the pool. I guess it showed. It's hard though to keep going month after month. I had forgiven myself before the race so I was determined to have fun. I was very happy to meet my top 3 finish goal although part of me feels I didn't quite earn 100% of it. But like I always said while playing golf, it's better to be lucky than good. LOL

Final notes: I did make a 2 min. improvement on last year's time. And an added bonus, Karla was 4th female overall and I was 9th. :-)

Event comments:

Ken was a little short on volunteers this year. It was pouring down rain in the AM. I was standing on the pool deck w/ sheets of rain coming down.

However, it's a great course and he is a great guy. I look forward to returning and hoping Drew can participate in the kids tri soon.

I think you totally earned our 3rd place podium, don't sell yourself short.  Those were some great T times, especially with a lack of tri shoes and Yanks laces.  Good luck with the OBX training and I'll be seeing you in October!

Nice podium finish!  Good job.

If you can get 3rd in your AG while being that unhappy with your swim, imagine what you can do when it starts to come together (which it will)!

Awesome race.

You'll be winning your AG when your swim comes around!  I laughed a little at the "bitter" description.  Nice job overall, you rocked on the run and bike!

You had a great race and were real strong on the bike!  Hopefully next year we can meet.  Good luck with the marathon training!  I am starting that too.  I have to run 15 tomorrow and am a little nervous.  Again, nice job racing in Hagerstown!
