Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() While running this morning I spent some time mulling over this concept. I think one of the reasons I've kept with my training plan so well (haven't had two zero days in a row since April) is that each of the three disciplines fulfills completely different roles for my brain. Swimming: Tranquility. The first time I noticed this was when I started open water swimming a bit. It's so quiet and peaceful in the water. Just a rhythmic spash, easy in and out of breath, suspended weightless, and a whole lot of quiet. In my first race once the start pack sorted out I had this same feeling. I was all alone in the world and it was so calm. Biking: Beauty. Rolling at 20 mph up hills, down hills, around corners, passing by ocean, rivers, lakes, forests, fields, small towns. I'm moving fast enough that I get to see a lot of varied terrain and when I don't have to concentrate on traffic it's a really great way to experience the outdoors. Running: Clarity. Running requires much less focus on the world around me than biking and so I really have time to get inside my head and think. I'm moving more slowly than on the bike so I don't see as much passing me by. I just get into a nice sustainable pace and can really concentrate on what's important in my head. I'm expending energy so the useless thoughts just sort of float away and my brain gets lots of quality thinking time. Anyhow, just some musings on why I'm enjoying this so much. Plus, having to do each of these things every week keeps my short attention spanned brain from getting too bored. |

People think I'm crazy when I say I need to go run so I can clear my head. No music... just me and my thoughts. It's a major stress release. I feel like I can work through issues better for some reason. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Great post. Love this. I feel the same way about swimming - I am so relaxed in the water (except during sprints..ugh..naturally ha) and look forward to the longer workouts. Thanks for sharing!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I love a run after a stressful day at the office! No music either... it is "down time" for me. Way to break down all three disciplines! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() hahaha....when i read the subject line i thought to myself....this must be a thread about three things that have nothing to do whith training for triathlons. then i read it and laughed at myself. maybe it's becuase i've only been doing this a few months and done a couple of races, but tranquility, beauty, and clarity are three words i would not use to describe my training. more like this... swimming: PANDEMONIUM. it's pure pandemonium trying to get all the parts of my body to work together in the most efficient manner all while trying to keep a solid breathing pattern and dodging the 1000 other people in the pool (or rowers in the lake). biking: BURNING. quads burning, arse burning, hands burning, neck burning, skin burning while trying to maintain speed and cadence in the wind, up hills, and around corners running: EXASPERATING. the constant battle between my mind telling me to not quit running, walk, it hurts, HTFU, speed up, slow down....all while trying to take my brain off of work and that running should help clear my mind. then the thinking about thinking starts up. and for some strange reason, i love it. i don't know about the rest of the beginners out there, but i can't wait to experience what you are saying!!! it's getting better day by day, but i have a long way to go. |

X100 My swim is coming around but biking hurts my arse , among other things. Running, hah, is a constant battle to keep my heart rate out of Zone 10. I love the advice of "run at a pace that would allow you to have a conversation". WTF! I am pretty sure that pace is called "Stationary". All that being said, I get done and can't wait to plug up my garmin and review my workout and look forward to what tomorrows workout will bring.

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wow, that was lovely! Those three words really do sum up the three discipline well. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Right on Beej! Exactly why I've migrated towards the long distance/endurance end of this game. For domestic reasons, all of my long rides/runs start in the pre-dawn hours. I find great inner peace out there by myself, high on endorphins, as the sun is coming up.... My wife, however, is still convinced that I have unmet needs from my childhood..... |

My bike doesn't seem to have that setting. ![]() Haha. Mine either. I did do a really nice bike ride this evening along quiet back roads. I absolutely felt tranquility and experienced beauty when I wasn't mashing myself silly up hills at 6mph. |
