Houston, Texas
United States
Total Time = 1h 41m 33s
Overall Rank = /
Age Group = fat guys
Age Group Rank = 15/32
Pre-race routine:

6er of blue cans and a Texas Chow Down (big ol' baked potato stuffed w/ brisket, cheese, sour cream, etc...) from Carl's (best bbq in TX).

Up at 3:45. Ate a couple of breakfast bars and a glass of Gatorade.

Met up w/ the guys at Spec's and drove down to Clear Lake.

Event warmup:

Visited the porto-potty (first one in! WINNER!!)

~300 yard easy swim with HoustonRider. Then sat around watching the OLY waves go off. I've always been in one of the first few waves so this was kind of cool.

Missed the alligators.

Comments:

Not a good entrance. You walk down a concrete bank that they tried to put carpet on. That didn't work. There were oysters / sharp rocks everywhere. My feet and hands got all cut up.

I wanted to start left front but couldn't get there before the gun so I ended up swimming around a lot of people. The scrum was good.

After the initial start settled down, I could feel my right foot bleeding and was wondering how this was going to affect my run. I started getting really pissed about this but then for some reason the folks in my BT Mentor Group popped in my head. I could hear them (more like read what they are writing) saying calm down and move forward. Deal with it later. From there I was pretty much good to go. They stung a bit but I was good. I just tried to focus on a few things involving my stroke.

Siting was great, the one thing I can do really well in this sport. I caught the wave in front about half way through.

The exit got a bit crowded as people stood up way to early. I probably passed 5 or 6 people in my wave right there. This was the first race where I came out of the water and was not gassed so I could run fast to transition. Passed more folks here.

The dumbass move of the day; My watch strap was a bit loose so I decided to put it in my cap. Of course I ripped my cap and goggles off at the exit and watch went flying into the crowd.

First time below 2:00 / 100!!
What would you do differently?:

Get in the very front of the wave when we are staging. Not put my watch in my cap.
Transition 1
  • 01m 52s
Comments:

Went ok. Had a good rack. I like a good rack. ;-)
What would you do differently?:

Winter time drills of getting on and off the bike with shoes clipped in and no socks for a sprint. I think this will cut a significant ammount of time off T.

Comments:

So that's what its like to pass people.

Very happy with this ride.

What would you do differently?:

Use my aero bottle instead of a regular bottle.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

happy with this. 8th in A/G
What would you do differently?:

Carry gel flask on course instead of hitting it in transition. But then maybe i should leave the flask at home for these shorter races and just carry a gel pack.
Run
  • 28m 42s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Although I'm happy with this, I should have pushed a lot harder here. It got hot out there quick.

Busted out the moonwalk as I crossed the line!
What would you do differently?:

Push harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much. Too hot to really hang out long.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

train more

Event comments:

Overall a good race and a great time. The volunteers were awesome. Thanks! Lots of people out and even a few gators to keep us in line.

Big Congrats to Runmerry1...AGAIN! More hardware!!!!

Lots of people had cut up feet from the start. Something to address. There was at least one major intersection (Hwy 96) that wasn't manned by volunteers or police.

Maybe I'll volunteer at this one next year

You know you could probably go faster without this pre-race meal.Laughing

"6er of blue cans and a Texas Chow Down (big ol' baked potato stuffed w/ brisket, cheese, sour cream, etc...) from Carl's BBQ (best bbq in TX). "

Great race John, congrats on the great swim and nice bike time also.

I'm so jealous about the swim.  I dream of sub 2:00 100s.  And what the hell - you must be kidding about the gators.  Great job on the bike.  Next time - suck it up buttercup and run.  ;-)  Great race!

Dang, now I want another one of those potatoes...  they were delicious!  Great job John!  Impressive bike, 20 mph is great!    Take care of those cut up feet and hand - oyster shell cuts can get nasty-infected!

Great job, John! An unmanned intersection in a race sounds pretty scarey. Between that, the gators, and the cut up feet,  I'm glad you survived to tell the tale. And, with a speedy time too!

I love the night before meal except the 6er. Never heard of Carl's, but it looks like I'm going to have to make a trip out to Cypress. Have you ever had Goode Co. BBQ. They are my favorite. I'll have to see how Carl's stacks up.
Great race, for a fat guy. JK. Wink I wish I was that fast. I've only done one sprint tri and I know I'll get faster.
