So, at mile 6 today I had to jump in the bushes b/c of "GI distress"

first time for everything, I guess.

didn't have anything to clean up with, sooooo, pulled up shorts and just finished the run...

shorts are getting an "extra" dose of detergent after that one...

maybe the shoes will, too.

anyone else?

multiple times... comes out of nowhere... and is seemingly independent of whether or not I used the facilities before the run.

welcome to the club.

Wow, really?  I mean I do cramp up and get a strong urge, but I have so far been able to fight it and the issue goes away after a while. But I'm running under 5 miles right now...maybe I should just say under 5 miles. No bushes in my neighborhood.

Leaves, grass, branches are all substitutes for toilet paper.

I get I'd say about 25-50% of my morning runs. Try to make sure you run past a public toilet in the first say 20 mins of your run just incase, that's what I do now.

there are no safe havens by me, but i've done several runs of over an hour duration, and never encountered that issue. I'm sure i would take the quickest path home if it happened to me...

Years ago my girlfriend (now my wife) and I were on a train in North Africa.  The local food had given GI issues.  When we pulled into a train station I ran into the bathroom....which turned out to be a damn hole in the floor!  Didn't matter as I had to go and I had a serious blowout!  I then looked around and there was no TP!  Nothing!

As I got back on the train my girlfriend asked "Hey, what happened to your socks?"  I said, "Don't ask!"

I carry TP in a zip-loc bag tucked into my waistband, every run. Yes, the bear does *go* in the woods.

the bear - 2009-08-29 6:56 AM I carry TP in a zip-loc bag tucked into my waistband, every run. Yes, the bear does *go* in the woods.

A bear and rabbit were both taking a dump.  The bear asks the rabbit, "Does crap stick to your fur?"  The rabbit says "Yeah."  So the bear wiped with the rabbit.

Well where we'd think a thead on this subject was heading?!

This is one of the reasons I like the winter better for running - it's dark when I run, so I don't have to go as far in/find as good cover.  Almost there...

1.  I learned that the feeling will not go away and to stop when you have the chance.
2.  I learned that I can run faster than I think I can as my fastest 2 miles EVER was running back to a portopottie I originally passed when I blew off Rule #1.
3.  I learned that apparently it's not acceptable to quit a run 30 mins early b/c of feeling disgusting from crapping in a portopottie in the dark.

Been there, done that, used a T-shirt.

Not really the t-shirt, but I did have to duck into the bushes once, and on one run had to just lean my back up against some guys fence in an alley and let it go. No leaves or grass that time, just pulled my shorts up and had to finish the run. That second time was in the middle of town so I was really glad no one came by. I have also popped into several gas stations and convenience stores to beg to use their restroom.

x2....+ 1 cheap head band ear/warmer thingy + a glove (during a winter run).  I feel really bad about the environmental impact but sometimes I forget my little baggie of TP and there's just no other option.

There are also nice very small individual packs with a wipe in them - kinda like a baby wipe!  We always carry them when hiking or 4-wheeling in the country.

I have scanned the bushes and trees where I run, all residential but I have never had the nerve to give it a try.  My luck it would not be a 'clean' exit and the funky butt would kill my run anyways.  Adding fiber and having coffee before my run seems to have stopped this from happening, but now I know...if I really had to, I would not be the first.  As my run length increases, I may have to pack the paper though....

The bouncing of the digestive system definitely brings things out.  As stated earlier, early morning runs in particular.  I used to run around the golf course and they had a portoilet on the back 9, pretty convenient.

Once got some poison ivy in with my leaves, not good.  It was hot that day and sweat ran down my legs..I had a huge case of poison ivy from bottom to toe.  Been more careful since then!

If you are in the woods and have to use what nature provides, just remember the old saying "Leaves three, wipe with thee."  Or something like that.  :-)

Welcome to the club.  For me,  happens mostly on early morning runs.  I run on the forest preserve path, so lots of cover, but need to watch out for those "leaves of three".  After having to use my arm warmers for, ya know, I now carry a snack size zip lock bag with wipes when out in the early am.

I've never had to stop, but I get horribly gassy on almost every run over 30 minutes.  Nutrition makes no diffrence on the outcome.

very much so the same, I call it my after burners kicking in. I can use all the extra propulsion i can get. Once had to duck in the bushes after eatting like a half a cheesecake before running. I just grabbed the newspaper from the house close by.

Have often joked with my buddies that everyone has a story.   Never expected but does happen.  Just about everyone has had it happen.

Yep - member of the club. All my long runs were Sun. mornings training for NYC marathon. Many folks in the neighborhood were without their Sunday funnies from their papers in the driveway...
