Subject: Finishing Medals..Rally up?

It occurred to me that I will never ever ever never never ever medal. I did a few races that gave finishing medals to everyone. For me, it was as if I won the Olympics. Yes, I do the races just for me and my personal goals. My time in the race I just did was slow, (slower then molasses), BUT, I felt a huge success because, the swim was a breeze, the bike felt more controlled, and I did the run almost effortlessly. I felt like a winner!! The greatest part of the race was that the night before I was relaxed and looking forward to the race.  I had won the race before I did the race. Back to my point. I wish we all got finishing medals. The "real" winners can get umm...a bigger one, or ones that say "1st, 2nd, 3rd"?

So, I propose, those who agree...add to this link and maybe it will become a big voice, a movement, a happening!!!

You are so right Nikki! When they put that medal around my neck, I felt like I won the whole thing! Out of the 6 tri's I've done, only 1 didn't have finishing medals and it felt sort of disappointing considering it was my first (and only so far..) Olympic distance. All I got was a lousy T-shirt. You really can't hang that on the wall.
Medals for everyone!!!!

Sorry, races are expensive enough, don't need the promoter charging additional money to pay for another trinket to hang from my dresser and collect dust. Nor do I need tangible proof or substantiation of my accomplishment. After every triathlon, running race or cycling event I've "felt like a winner."

Nikki, I am with you.  I cherish my finisher medals.  T-shirts are nice.  But the medals are special.

I need the trinket. Then I can look at it and remember that accomplishment. I know it's petty, but it works for me.

I'm with bear on this one. Races are pricey enough. I can see myself wanting one for a half IM or longer but that's it.

Maybe an RD could make it an option on the race application and charge $5 more or whatever the cost is for those who elect to get one.

I'm with Bear. I wouldn't have any place to put them all. Right now the only ones I that I really wanted were from the half and full IM races. Even then, they were great for about a day or so. Now they are with all the rest of finishing and participating medals that I own.

I'd rather the medal than the t-shirt. Which costs more? I don't see that much difference in registration price between finishing medal races and non either. Further, how about the medals being sponsered by Powerbar, or Active or umm...BT? ;0

Nor do I need tangible proof or substantiation of my accomplishment.
Oh mighty Bear...aren't you the epitome of self confidence and unmaterialistic existence. Well, me...I really dig symbolism! A glance over at the medal and oh boy...i'm reminded of pride and joy.

I have yet to race my first. I thought that finishing was all there was to it - maybe you can do really good splits too. Now you've introduced the whole finishing first thing... I'm greedy with first place finishes, and I want one... lol
Let me finish a race first though.

Medals are nice. But the only people who see them are people who come to your house. Shirts you can show off to every one you see. Well I guess you could do that with medals also but you would probably get funny looks wearing medals around. But I guess the looks I was getting while running on a Saturday night in the pouring rain were kinda funny too.

You *don't* wear your medals? Hmmm... no wonder people have been looking at me strange. I thought it was just that they had trouble reading the tiny type... 1.5k swim, 40k bike, 10k run.

It depends on the race.  In a small or local race I don't particularly care whether I get a finisher's medal or not.  If it's a big race of some significance then the medal is nice.  2 years ago when I did the AG Nationals they didn't give a finisher's medal which I thought was absurd since one has to qualify to be in the race.  They also don't give out finisher's medals at the Age Group World Championships.  Last year they did give finisher medals at Nationals.  I guess I wasn't the only one who complained.  It was a cool medal.  Instead of being on the usual ribbon it was hanging on 2 strands of Mardi Gras beads.

Actually what I'd rather have then a medal or a t-shirt is a pin with the event logo.  One race I did for years gave a different color pin each year.  The old USTS Bud Light races gave a finishers pin.  I had all those pins on a hat.  Some big races do have them for sale so I add them to my collection.

I'm rather partial to pins. You are dealing here with someone who's pin collector.  I have 100s of bike and Olympic pins.  I also have probably one of the largest collections of chess pins in the country.  I've lost count but it's probably around 3000 different pins just related to chess.

NJVT, yeah...t-shirts others can see and it brings up great chats with others. But, usually I only wear the t-shirts to run it cuz they all look so big and frumpy on me. The only race t-shirt i got which was GREAT was from Danskin last year. It was a wick-away sleeveless. I wore that alot after the race.

Okay...so, wick-away t-shirts and sponsered medals. How's that sound? he-he

Well, I'm new to tri's but have done many runs and bike rides so....

I've got a passle of medals just hanging in the closet cause I don't know what to do with them and I can't bring myself to throw them out....

I've got a drawerful of shirts for the same reason....

I've got about 3 or 4 trophies/plaques/paperweights - which are kinda cool, but also in the closet. Got a mini towel, a painters hat, some coolmax, some trail gators, and various other weird stuff.

And I've got one REALLY GREAT finishers coffee mug and one travel mug that I can use every day!

Hey, I've got an idea - how about a finishers mouse pad? - LOL

I guess, if I had to pick, I like finishers shirts best... oh yeah, beer mug would be nice (filled up please)!

Now back to lurking...

I like the medals too a limited degree.  For each major accomplishment I plan to frame the medal and a picture together.  ie First Oly, First 1/2 IM, First IM, First 1/2 Marathon, First Marathon.  Then after that, who knows.  But I have to believe every IM finisher's medal would be worth framing.  I like having them as a daily reminder of the sedentary life I used to live and how far I have come from that lifesytle.

I'm with the bear on this. I have a whole pile of hardware from my competitive fencing days. All it does is catch dust. My first tri had finishers medals, t-shirts, & towels. The medal was nice, the t-shirts and towels are actually useful, but none of it can compare to the pride of having done it.

I don;t need medals. I sure do like cool tshirts as long as they aren't enormous. And ditto in the wicking Tshirt from Danskin. It's be cool if more race "goodies" were actually related to the sport. I appreciate that they come from sponsors, and I appreciate that it is the sponsors who make it all happen, but I hate throwing out gobs of paper and ads, and meaningless coupons for things that I am not interested in, etc. I've gotten sunblock (useful) razors (useful) socks (useful) but gobs of other junk through the years that go right in the trash..

bottom line: skip it all and lower race fees!

I agree, I'm the world's biggest swag-whore, provided the swag is useful. Last year, the big local triathlon (CajunMan) gave in its race packet a CoolMax T-shirt, a Headsweats running cap, SockGuy CoolMax socks, a nylon gear bag, a towel and a coozie, all printed with with the event logo. I use all of this extensively in my training and racing.

But alas, no finishers medal so the dust on my dresser has one less place to be.

Maybe, if you don't want the medal, leave it with the race organizers so they can hand it out to someone else who would appreciate it if they run out of medals.

I wish they wouldn't give out medals. Isn't the accomplishment enough? You need a piece of metal to remind you and make you feel special. People who race for medals are racing for the wrong reasons. It is cool when they give out medals at kids' races, they seem to like them.

Need medals to remind you of pride and joy? Then I believe I found the perfect sponsors:
