A question for the experienced Boston runners or spectators...

My bib is 12040 and I'm in the first wave and I'm assuming I'm in the 12th corral.

After the gun fires; how long will it take me and my corral buddies to get to the start line?

I'm not concerned about it, I'm just trying to get a mental picture of how it's going to be.

jkron - 2010-04-13 8:02 PM Confirmed: Old, tall, bald guy loaded with pin-up girl tats; yeah, I'm thinking there shouldn't be too many guys like that in the crowd.

LMAO!  Yeah, I knew that would narrow it down!!

This was the sign that was posted at the pre-staging area....I'll do my best to hang around there.  Also Marianne from BT  (mav)  might be with me as well.

The street is pretty wide where the corrals are, but it kind of narrows down right at the top of the hill at the start line but by that point everyone in front of you will be moving.  12th corral....hmmm, I'd guess you might be shuffling along for (edited) 5 minutes or more?  I haven't checked the official start times, but I'm assuming they are doing two waves like they have done for the past few years.

Here is a shot from behind the starting line, going back down the main street, from corral #6 on backwards....so maybe you can guess from this?  LOL

Hah!  I just noticed from the last photo that at least the cost of gasoline has dropped about 70 cents per gallon over the last couple of years....these photos were from 2008.

I was about 3-1/2 minutes behind the gun from Corral 6 last year, if that's any help.  I have pics at the finish with a 3:07 low on the clock and my chip time was 3:03 high.

From the beginning, I was still able to run the pace of my qualifying / seeding time (3:15).  It just took a few miles to break free so that I could run the pace I ended up running for most of the race.

Running a slower first couple of miles probably helped.  I considering trying to bob 'n' weave through the crowd to get ahead, but then thought "it's a long day - no need to use everything up in the first half."  Most likely, sitting back and going with the flow helped make for an enjoyable race.

This is my plan...go with the flow. I'll know within the first mile if this will be a good day or not.  If so, I'll hopefully find some like-minded folks who are looking for something around 3:15.  If not, 3:20.  If not that, I'll kiss every Wellesley girl that'll have me...

Other than hubby at the finish, who's there for us ladies to kiss?!?!?

I'll be wearing a (brand new, thanks Hubby!) hot pink asics short sleeve top and black with pink stripe shorts.  White cap, with a a short brown pony tail.  Corral 20.....way at the back of the pack!!

Starting to pack, make lists for all of the babysitters/dog sitter/carpool subs!  Got a mom to cover the basesball stats, another to take my place at the swim meet.....whew.  Quite a warm-up!

Got tickets for the Red Sox game on Sunday, dinner reservations for Via Matta Saturday night.  Hubby's renting a cervelo to train Saturday.....I'm gonna need time off to recover before the race!!

Anyone have any experience with trying to get to the start via private car? I'm staying iwth family in Wellesley Hills, right at mile 15.5 on the course. Just wondering what is the best way to get to the start.

It has only taken 2 years for my master plan to kiss a college girl and get away with it to finally pay off.

Because of the HUGE problem of parking close to Hopkinton, your best bet is to park at Hopkinton State Park on Rt. 85, north of the town.  Approach the park by driving south from the intersection of Rt. 9 and Rt. 85.....DO NOT try to come from the south (center of Hopkinton itself) as it will be nearly impossible.  Follow the signs for parking and take one of the frequent shuttle buses that will drop you off right near the center of Hopkinton.  Walk about 1/4 mile or so to the prestaging area from there.  After the race, there will be shuttle service back to the state park where you can pick up your car.  Do a googlemaps search for the state park!

Cool -I'm in you corral.   I read somewhere that we woudl be starting at about 10:11 - so I guess about a minute per corral.  I plan that first mile to be at least a minutes slower than race pace due to people traffic.

I am in corral 3# and I was in that one last year.  My first mile was at sub 3 hour pace.  people get moving right out of the chute!  Most people start out too fast.  I think it is harder to go slow since everyone is so excited.  My plan is to really go out 5-10 seconds slower than my goal pace and let people go by.  My 2 cents.  Easier said than done!  Hope to meet some of you while out there!

Why change?  Your sweaty shorts and shirt would be a 'badge of honor', to be proudly work in most any restaturant - especially those close by the course!

Still trying to get back from Europe and things are not looking good.  On a train to Italy tomorrow to try and catch a flight to JFK then make it up to Boston.  Ash cloud keeps speading so its 50/50.  This is a total bummer.
