I was wondering the same thing.  I read yesterday that the oil was no where near PCB and they weren't sure if it would even make it there.

Have fun out there today everyone!

They went ahead with the swim.  I was relay swimmer on a team and I wasn't able to complete the swim.  I was horrible for me but I may just be a wuss.  Feel really bad for the team I was swimming for.  My appologies.

Yes we did the swim and it was completly BRUTAL.  Like the second loop IMFL 06....super hard.  Oil was not a factor

Nice seeing some of you out there! Congrats to all you finishers. Just to finish this half is a pretty big accomplishment given those dastardly conditions.

I commented a few weeks ago:  "If it's wetsuit-legal and if I can avoid falling apart in the last hour of the run, I'm hoping to beat my 2003 time, which would make it my fastest half-iron since my first one in 1991, also at Gulf Coast, when I was a young lad of 42."  As it turned out, it was wetsuit-legal, but I also fell apart near the end of the run.  So I narrowly missed my stretch goal, finishing just 29 seconds slower than in 2003.  I did, however, manage to break six hours (my primary goal), and I also averaged faster on the bike than in any race of any distance since that same 1991 race.  Oh, and I managed to bring home hardware, for the first time in this race.  All things considered, I'm pleased.

The water was very choppy, but somehow I seemed to stay on course for a change.  There was a strong west wind on the bike, but I handled it intelligently with the aid of my Powertap.  The only real problem was that I had nothing left in the last 4-5 miles of the run.  I still have probably not recovered all the run endurance I had prior to an extended period of injury that I got past just nine months ago.  If I could only have postponed that slowdown long enough to gain me another thirty seconds....

You know how I wrote in this thread about 5 pages ago, that there wasn't going to be any current/drift? Forget I said that...I was in best swim shape yet and this was my slowest swim time in 6 GCT's..Poor sighting is to blame. Guy in a kayak came by and asked if I knew where I was at one point on the swim back to shore..LOL!

Thank you all for your comments. It's nice to know that I wasn't the only one struggling on the swim. With very little training and 3 weeks post op from knee surgery, my swim has to be the world's SLOWEST for this distance. I was ALL OVER THE PLACE...and..maybe it was just me..but I think the kayakers where having as much difficulty as we were!! When I exited the water way down the beach, I just told everyone I was ready for a beer at La Vela..the bar next door to the race venue...as least that's where i was headed!!!

I made it in...with a few minutes to spare and tagged up my relay partner for the bike!! Whew!! What a ride!!! Don't you just love a challenge!! Congrats to all those that had fun and finished!!

Had a good time doing GCT for the first time.  I actually thought the swim wasn't that bad until about the last 300yds...I didn't like the head wind going out on the bike and the timing of the sun come run time.  All in all, it was a learning experience for me.  I know now to use salt and eat the damn banana's and to wear more sunscreen!!

Also, it was great meeting some of you and I look forward to staying in touch as we get prepared for IMFL in November.  Congrats to all that finished and those that placed!!
