Yup, I'm heading to Kona Saturday and will be swimming at Dig Me Beach Sunday morning and then driving out to Hawi so I can go for a ride on the back end of the bike course.

As some of you know I debated on what wheel to ride up front. I was debating between my 808 and 404 up front with an 808 back. I got both my 404 and 808 front in my bike box before I left Austin and last second I took out the 808.

I am VERY happy I left the 808 at home. I was blown all over the damn place today up by Hawi with the 404. I don't mean for this to scare people but if anyone else was debating it and has an option, now that I've ridden part of the course there is NO WAY I'd ride 808 up front.

Now the good news is they are calling for ligher winds by the weekend.

The weather to watch is the weather in Hawi, not Kona. Yesterday and today it's wind with gust up to 23mph. later this week and Saturday is calms down to a more normal 15-20mph out of the east. Regardless of what wheel you use, you have to descend holding the bull horns for stretches. It's safer that way regradless.

Clearly these women are better bike handlers than me. :-) And yes, even the pros are riding the horns on the decent from Hawi. I just figure the peace of mind is worth more to me than the few minutes saved using an 808 front.

As you say, weather in Hawi is different than Kona. Gusts were actually up to 45mph yesterday at Hawi but the forecast is for calmer winds by Friday.

I also haven't found it to be hot here at all. I know I haven't been racing in it for 8 hours but it sure doesn't feel near as bad as 103 with humidity did all summer in Austin.

And it won't feel anywhere near that. The hottest part of the day is the first 10 miles of the run while you are still around town as there's not a lot of wind, but once you climb Palani and hit the Queen K you'll feel much better. Well...cooler anyway, maybe not "better"

We went up to Hawi today and it was quite nice temperature-wise - we thought it was perfect race weather.  As soon as we got back into Kona - hot!  Quite a change between the two.  Things are starting to hop around town!  I shouldn't have come because I have some serious bike envy!  Laughing
