Pre-race routine:

Peanut butter sandwich, coffee, 24 oz. gatorade, cliff bar chocolate almond. Enudorex Excel, vitamin B, multivitamin.
Event warmup:

10 min easy run, 5min light aerobic excersices, 10 min swim
Swim
  • 17m 3s
  • 1050 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

In order to avoid the crowd I swam open during the swim. Though my swim was easy adn comfortable this hurted me on time as I estimate I swam at least 100 or more yards
What would you do differently?:

start open and then get into the shortes course line.
Transition 1
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

wevrything went smooth.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 1h 18m 37s
  • 27.3 miles
  • 20.84 mile/hr
Comments:

I start out too hard as I almost hit my LT zone a few times. I can tell I need to do a lot of work on the bikes as is my weakest leg. I did pretty good considering but still if I want to place top ten I need to work work work
What would you do differently?:

try to get into a rythm instead of trying to go out fast. next time I need a bike computer and just wear my polar on the wrist as a HR. I had constact problems getting cadence, speed and power readings and this dsitracted me quite a bit...
Transition 2
  • 01m 12s
Comments:

I dind't wear sucks. next time make sure to practice this before the race
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Run
  • 39m 36s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 06m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt strong throughout the run, though I felt at the end cramps were coming. I need to keep my sodium levels more in ckeck. Also I feel if I would of had a stronger bike leg my time for the run would had been better.
What would you do differently?:

maybe wear sucks? maybe not...
Post race
Warm down:

walk for 5 min. Drank Endurox R4 with water, ate a bagel and a redbull. Streched lightly for 10 min and then enjoyed the rest of the race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

BIKE!!!

Event comments:

Great event!
This was my first official Olympic-1/4 distance. I am pretty happy considering it was a challenging course and a competitive field. in a few weeks it will be my 1 year anniversary since I started training for Tris for which I feel I'd come a long way and I had accomplished quite a lot. My running is my best sport and I am happy because if I can imporve on my bike and keep my swim steady I am certain I will be able to compete for a top 10 in the next races. My dream would be to complete an IM in a year or two, but also to have a chance to compete for a Olympic slot for my country. At this point I still have alot of work to do but I am a bit closer than last year ;)

Jorge...you did awesome...and look how great you did training only for a year!!

It was the first hot day we have had all year which was more of a factor I thought in the run.
For biking being your weakest, you did great.

Keep your dreams alive!

Hey Jorge, WAY TO GO! You had an awesome race and I am glad you did so well! Having had a pretty rough time of it on this course, I am totally in awe of your times!

I think that if you continue to committ to the bike the way you have with the other events your future in the sport is quite bright!

Thank you all for the kind words. The water wasn't bad at all. I think the weather really helped us a lot on the days leading to the race. Before the race they told us the water was around 60 degrees but I am pretty sure it was colder than that. I did like 4 or 5 OW swim at Walden Pond; 3 of which the water was around 51-55 degrees. Of course I did this to practice the swim in COLD water. I was happy when the water was very swimable yesterday!

Great race Jorge!  The water did warm up a lot this week. I was there all week, and it was much colder earlier in the week. Yesterday felt much nicer.  Really excellent times all around, it was a very competitive field, and being top 10 in your age group at this race is something to be very proud of. Keep up the good work!

You are doing great for having just been doing this for one year!! I guess you will do the Timberman HALF IM then?

Psssst: rumored that even though that race is in the same relative neighborhood, the hills aren't as brutal!

Fantastic race Jorge! Wow, we can't call you a "Beginner" by any stretch of the imagination! 34th place...I'd kill for that!! Just wish I could have gotten up there to watch you. Things are only going to get better in your racing, I can see that.
