I signed up.  I just signed up for my first triathlon.  My wife doesn't understand.  After 16 years of little to no physical activity I started running again last summer.  I even got my wife, who had never ran, to run with me.  We completed three 5K races.  My best friend completed several tris a few years ago, including a 70.3.  I started reading more about them, found this website and got hooked.

I am comfortable with the run and I am sure the swim will be fine once I get back into swimming shape.  I swam in high school and love the water.  The bike part is what I am most concerned about.  Like many I have not rode a bike since I was a kid.

I have my goals set for the swim, bike and run sections and 5 months to reach them.  Life is good!

Congratulations!  I too was a long-time couch potato before getting into triathlons.  I kept "losing my head" and signing up for longer and longer races.  I'm glad I did.  My wife took about a year to get on board with it.  She still thinks I'm a little nuts.

I think that the bike is the easiest thing to get up to speed on.  I got a bike 5 weeks out from my first tri and I was fine.  I was lucky that I found a great group of people to ride/run with and they were very accepting of a beginner.

What area of Georgia are you in?

Congratulations!!!

You'll do great.  Just remember to ask questions and don't be shy.  We are a pretty active forum here.

See you out there.

Congratulations on taking the plunge ... great sport full of good people. Like Dan said, fire away with any questions you may have as this is the right place to do it.  (You wont get flamed for asking questions here as it is "Beginner Triathlete" after all )

Also, now is probably the best time you will ever find in buying a bike - either new or used. Go to your local bike store or to All3Sports(.com), which is located off of the GA-400 Northside Drive exit, to get an idea of the right bike size. This is important as a good deal on the wrong sized bike is a bad deal.

Armed with this knowledge you can shop away.

Thanks for all the supportive comments.  I am in LaGrange, GA and have already been to the LBS.  Found a bike I like...planning on making the purchase in March.  There is a group that rides here regularly and I hope to ride some with them.

I signed up for the Turtle Crawl Sprint on Jekyll Island in May.  The reviews sound great and my wife can go along and enjoy the beach that weekend.

Congrats on joining the fun...remember, it is a game of consistency.  Set some reasonable goals and make a little progress everyday.  Nothing really happens in big leaps unless you are a genetic freak like some of the guys and gals on the forum.  Steady as she goes for us mere mortals.

Looks forward to your first race report!

Congrats, and welcome!  I was in your shoes a couple of years ago...but without any kind of swimming background - so your ramp-up will be much easier, trust me!

Callaway tris are fun, as is West Point Lake, once you get Turtle Crawl under your belt and realize how fun it is.  All are local to you.  Best of luck to you!

Cheers,
Mark

You're in a great place to start from; comfortable in swim and run. Lots of us have a solid swim OR run. lol Bike seems to take care of itself based on how much saddle time you make. Congrats on the decision. (Save some money for a bike for the wife, she'll come around)
