One last night of goofing off before the real training starts.  Why am I so excited to be exhausted for the next 19 weeks?

This will be my first HIM and can hardly wait.

MechEChick - 2010-01-11 5:40 PM One week until training starts for those of us doing the 20 week plan! Everybody ready?

I am signed up for this one and I am excited.  This will be my first 1/2 ironman and get to do it with a lot of family support.  I am from Kansas originally and my family is all still there.  What a great way to start?!

So what did everyone do to start off their 20 week plan? I am doing a plan from Mark Allen Online. I rode for 4 hours, did 30 min of power sliding, and 15 min of stretching and foam rolling.

Initially, I mistakenly set my plan up as if I was doing an IM. That is why my plan called for a 4 hour ride. I have it fixed now and the ride should have only been 2.5 hours. Oh well, now I have 1.5 hours of ride time in the bank.

Well my work out called for just a 1 hour bike ride. I am using a plan from the Triathletes magazine, Essential week-by-week training guide. Good luck to every one that has started your training.

Does anyone have an update on when the camping information will be sent out?  I thought it was going to be in late January but I may be wrong.

Camping info is up and they are taking reservations.  What is the advantage to Premium over Standard?

Glad I got the email notification about the camping. I think what I received was maybe a little overkill though..

After a very unstructured off season base program. I am doing a modified 20 week BT HIM plan for swim and bike. My run training is a 18 week plan from the book "Run Less Run Faster", which is blended into the overall plan with increased distance\pace Bike\Run BRICKS.

This is my first 1/2 ironman and the first triathlon I've raced that wasn't close to home.  So, I'm not familiar with the camping option.  There seems to be a lot of interest in it on this forum.  Can some one explain to a newby what the big deal is and whether I should think about it or not?  I'm just looking for a hotel nearby right now.

I had a site last year, and while I have no desire to sleep outdoors before such an event, it was great having a designated parking spot and an area that was labeled for family and friends to gather at during the race.  I just drove into the spot the morning of the race.

It's just a nice option to have since if you camp, you are literally just feet away from transition and start/finish lines. You don't have drive in from your hotel or fight traffic or arm wrestle someone for a parking spot on race morning. I think a lot of people really enjoyed the convenience factor of camping; and it's something hardly any other races offer. The race site is in a State Park, so the campgrounds are already there - they are actually on the run course which makes it also applealing to those who have a cheering section - they can just "camp out" (heh) at their campground and see their athlete at least two times without even leaving their lawn chair. Plus you can't beat the price (assuming you have a tent and other necessary gear)!

Not sure if this is new news or not, but it looks like Chrissie is coming back to Kansas this year.  Cool.

For a 70.3 newbie, what is a "normal" Saturday prior to the race?  I am wondering if it is best to go down and camp both Friday and Saturday? I am trying to convince my Dad to come down from MI and bring the motorhome in case of excessive heat.  Do most people do a quick swim and a ride on Saturday? I assume the lake is open on Saturday...

Thanks

Yep, Chrissie is coming back!

Look for a big announcement on the men's side shortly as well!

Everything is shaping up to be a phenomenal race!

You will not be able to swim the actual swim course, but there are other swim areas at the Lake that you can go to.

I like to get a nice, relaxed workout in the day before.  I'll probably do 10 miles or so on the bike, then go for a swim afterwards.  I'll also spend some time stretching, relaxing, and being social.  I've found the workout calms my nerves and gives me some self-confidence about the course.  After the workout I will sometimes take a drive on the bike course to get a feel for it too.  This being the first time I'm doing KS, I'll definitely drive it.

And I'm lucky- my brother-in-law works for Hilton and can get me his discount on the Hampton Inn.  I do think it would be cool to camp, but I don't have any of the necessary equipment, so it would be cheaper for me to stay @ the Hampton.

Let's try to meet and get a ride/swim in together if our schedules work out.  Thanks for all of the mentoring.

I am doing Branson too.  I would imagine their are quite a few out there doing both races.  It was a hell of a deal to sign up for both at the same time.

I just recieved an e-mail stating that if you sign up for Kansas or Branson before February 14th, you can recieve a new pair of K-Swiss shoes.  You need to enter a certain code and a shoe size.  They in turn will send a free pair within 4 to 5 weeks.  I missed out also, I'm already registered.
