OK, new rule.  Nobody over 60 gets to do the Superbowl Halftime show.  They can sing the national anthem however.

eabeam - 2010-02-07 7:43 PM My mind kept trying to calculate how many social workers' and teachers' annual salaries could have been covered for what The Who got paid.

Hmmm,

A private business doing what they want to increase viewership of their product - has absolutely nothing to do with social workers & teacher salaries.

I will say a lot of taxes were generated last night that goes to pay for that stuff.

I asked the question at our 'party' as to what % of people actually could name a song from the WHO and who's response was, "Oh...they are the ones that do the theme to CSI: Miami".

I think it was like the commercial where Lebron and (don't know who) asked "Who's he?" to Larry Bird.  Same thing with the WHO.

I personnally liked the clear drum set. I had one of those in the late '70s and now I wish I would have hung on to it. Otherwise, wasn't all that impressed.

Tough crowd!  I actually LOVED it.  The vocals were a little weak, but come on!  The entire stadium was screaming along to the lyrics.  The guys were rocking their guitars.  The lasers were sweet!  I thought it was great.

^ x2.  I enjoyed it, but am admittedly a big Who fan.  My take-away was I thought that Pete looked like he has having fun, so I considered it a success!

Hate to break this to anyone that didn't already know, but according to the Chicago Tribune a couple of years ago, the Superbowl halftime shows are prerecorded, and the band is playing along to a prerecorded backing track. In the case of Springsteen in '08, only the vocals were actually live. Most likely, this is what The Who did as well.

Hank Neuberger, the Tribune's source, says "not only Hudson and Hill recorded their performances in advance, but so did halftime performers Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Only Springsteen’s vocals were live, he said. There is no way you can set up a full band in five minutes with microphones, get all the settings right, and expect to get quality sound,” Neuberger said. “The Super Bowl has been doing that for years with virtually all the bands.”

Did anyone else noticed all the raging fans running into the field to gather 'round the stage?
This was Miami for cryin' out loud - a real party town!  Where were all those crazy fans?

I think they were all at the consescion stand buying loads of beer (or earplugs).

The Who, who?

Even a fortysomething like me knows the band, but, Superbowl Halftime show material? I think NOT.   NBC aired an interview where PT was even quoted as saying: yeah, we have something similar in the UK its called RUGBY, and he also said he'd never even watched an American Football game ever in his life.   Wow!  Some patronage.

Cheers to the Saints!  Well deserved victory.  My favorite part was also the sidekick.

This is harsh, but the Who is just too old to do that gig. The younger crowd doesn't know them, and I don't want to know them as senior citizens struggling to lip-synch or air-guitar through their classics.

I vote for a reunion of the Smashing Pumpkins for next year. Or Metallica. Or U2 again. In fact, if my choice today was the Who or the Stanford Marching Band, I am voting for Stanford.

Didn't read the article but I will say this... I don't think Roger's or Pete's vocals (or guitar) was taped.  Except for maybe Roger's scream in (Won't Get Fooled Again)... judging from the rest of his set, I don't think he could have hit that note.  There were several occasions when I saw Pete miss some notes and one windmill all together, and his solos were not up to par.  I thought maybe his hands were cold... makes it tough to shred.

I don't remember if Springsteen's set looked off, but I'm pretty sure Prince's guitar and vocals were live.  His custom guitar was having a lot of trouble staying in tune (with the rain and high humidity) and you could tell.  I don't think they would make everything sound poorly on purpose, just to hide the tape.
