I know the US guys are crushed losing like this, but their silver medalists in a field that include the best Russian team ever, Sweden and Finland, last Oly medallists, and pretty darn good Czech and Slovak teams. They should hold their heads very very proudly.

Today I loathe Sidney Crosby; tomorrow I love him. As Jerry Seinfeld says: Basically, we're rooting for the clothes.

Best hockey game I've seen in memory. Maybe 2 penalties? All strategy and effort. Fantastic game to watch.

I always really thought it was medals per capita. Kudo's to Norway!

But I changed my opinion. Its gold medals.

That was thrilling. Maybe one of the best games I've seen in any sport.

They should have a hockey league in the US. I bet it would really catch on.

Congratulations to Team Canada, a great way for them to end the Olympics.

Team USA has no reason to hang their heads. The "experts" thought the US would be lucky to medal and instead they went undefeated into the gold medal game and took a LOADED Canadian team, IN CANADA to overtime. They worked their tails off the entire tournament. Great, great job by team USA!

You almost never see fighting in international competition. It’s mostly an NHL thing. That said, it was a lot chippier than most other Olympic hockey games you’d see.

I think it was Jeremy Roenick or Ed Olczyk who said that only 2 or 3 guys on the US team would even make Team Canada since they were so stacked, so given that, it’s a huge moral victory, although it probably doesn’t feel like that to them today.

I haven’t followed hockey that closely for a few years, but it was a little jarring to see how many relative no-names were on the US team. I remember the teams from the 90’s that were stacked with guys like Roenick, Hull, Leetch, Chelios, LeClair, Modano, Tkachuk, etc. Other than the guys who play for the Devils, I hadn’t heard of most of these guys.

Interesting that you hadn't heard of many of the US players as I would guess many Canadians are quite familiar with the names due to the World Junior Tournament.  The World Junior Tournament is widely televised in Canada and many of the US players have figured prominently in the tournament in the past few years so it was not a big surprise to see them making an impact at the Olympics.

Hockey has, unfortunately, sunk practically to the level of a fringe sport in the US. I don’t know that many NHL fans anymore, and even of the handful of die-hard Ranger and Islander fans I know, I don’t think any of them follow the sport to the extent that they would pay attention to the World Junior Tournament.

Is the World Junior Tournament even televised in the US? I tend to doubt it. It’s hard enough to find NHL games on tv anymore, much expecting anyone to televise the WJT.

I wouldn't say it's a fringe sport but it defintely is regional. Most fans in MN were familiar with a number of the players because they played college hockey and with 5 D1 programs in the state....

The NHL network televised the world juniors the last couple years.

I think so.  It was a GREAT game, IMO.  I only saw one penalty, and maybe a couple of "scuffles" that were intervened immediately.  I'm not much of a hockey game watcher, but of the number I have watched (used to watch the Blackhawks game as a kid), this was exciting.

Probably not, ESPN 17 is probably too busy trying to get darts, trick billiards and spelling bees into the schedule.
