Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:30am, couldn't sleep well. Banana, yogurt, OJ for breakfast, clif bar when I got to the TA.
Swim
  • 21m
  • 750 yards
  • 02m 48s / 100 yards
Comments:

I haven't had to deal with a wave start like that before. At Fall Chill, even though there were a lot of people, they didn't keep swimming over you if they bumped into you. Lost my breath, sucked in some water, and couldn't bring my breathing/HR down for the life of me.
What would you do differently?:

More OW swim practice

Comments:

At the meeting, they claimed the course had been swept. I find that hard to believe. I passed at least three others that had flats before I lost mine.
What would you do differently?:

Use solid rubber tires.

Event comments:

Don't know about the drink stations or anything else, as I never made it far enough to find out. I was off my swim goal by 4 minutes, which I figured I could make up in the bike.

I had pratcied changing flats. I had trained specially for this race. I was determined to make a statement (to myself, at least) at this race. I had my T1 dialed in (even if it was a fairly long run to the TA), and T2 would've taken about 30 seconds. But I learned that no matter how well you prepare, there are ALWAYS some things that you will not be able to control. Had I flatted on the way back (within a mile or two), I would've carried the friggin' bike. On the way out (4 miles out to be exact), I knew I was through for the day.

I'm angry, at myself and CDOT (who would've swept the roads). I'm frustrated, and I feel rightfully so. Next weekend is the Loveland Lake-to-Lake tri. I have no idea how I'm going to handle that 1.5K swim, but I'll plan, now, on going out MUCH slower on the swim. But I'm a bike-demon. That's where I do my best. Barring any additional probs (like today), I *will* own that bike route. All that this has done today, is make me even more determined for my future races.

And no, it never occured to me to carry more than ONE spare tube, but then again, if you tried to plan for every possibility, you'd have to carry half a bike store.

Course: DNF. Started picking off people immediately after leaving T1 - I probably passed about 50. Then I blew my rear tire (why is it ALWAYS the rear that blows in races?!) Pulled out glass sliver with my fingers, switched tubes, started to inflate tire - tube was bad. Had TWO holes. Thought my pump was bad. Infosteward tried to help, but couldn't get hers to work. With two holes, I couldn't even hear the air leaking out, and thought it was just my anger/anxiety preventing me from inflating the tube.

Sorry to hear about the flat, Joe. You certainly weren't the only one. As a spectator, I saw one guy riding into T2 on a flat rear tire and 2 others who walked/ran the last mile or two w/ their bikes.

Good luck at the Loveland Lake to Lake!

SO SO SO SO SORRY about the flat, Joe. I heard about it and just hurt inside for you. That's too bad. You'll kick ass next Saturday at Loveland. Lightning doesn't strike twice, so they say.

Hey Joe - I'm so sorry to hear about the flat - that's such a bummer for the first race of the season     At least you have plenty of races this season to make up for it.  I kept wondering when you were going to pass me on the bike!!

Holy hell, brother.  That just sux.  But you can't put this one on YOU.  It's not on you, nothing you can do, other than soldier on and get 'em next time.  And if you haven't gone there already - KEVLAR.

I know you were looking forward to seeing the payoff for all the training.  It'll just have to wait one more week...that's all.

OK amigo - we still get to go head to head at Boulder Peak.  Think of your next two tris and "training races".  I'll be there on 7/24.  I'll bring my A game since we didn't get to battle it out yesterday

Woohoo - this going to be fun!!!  (for the rest of you, there's a root beer on the line here!)
