5430 Sprint - TriathlonSprint

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 46m 39s
Overall Rank = 601/934
Age Group = 30-35
Age Group Rank = 80/105
Pre-race routine:

Wake up butt-ugly early at 5 am. Take a shower, eat some cereal, pack up the truck, and head out.
Event warmup:

No warmup. I did get in the water a few minutes before my heat took off so that I'd get used to the water temp. The wetsuit was sweet!
Swim
  • 22m 8s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

It sucked. I felt like I had never swam a lap in my life; every single tip and trick I know on how to swim efficiently and how to breathe went out the door. Once I started catching up to people, I started swimming with my head above water a bit and it all went downhill from there. No matter how many times I stopped to catch my breath (4!), I still couldn't get back into my rhythm. I did a heck of a lot of backstroke in the second half of the loop.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more in open water. Start out farther to the outside - I'd rather swim an extra 100 yds than do what I did today.
Transition 1
  • 02m 11s
Comments:

I was so freaking tired from my swim, I walked from the shore to my bike. Once I got there, things went smoothly.
What would you do differently?:

Bring my darn towel!!!
Segregate my bike stuff from my run stuff.
Bike
  • 54m 29s
  • 17 miles
  • 18.72 mile/hr
Comments:

I went a bit faster than I expected for the bike. I never rode Neva Rd before and it was pretty nice - good downhill, then pretty flat.
What would you do differently?:

Bring a little more drink and keep the Accelerade cold. I thought 1 litter plus a bottle would be enough, but it wasn't. And I didn't have to pee at the end of the bike (or run), so I surely wasn't drinking too much.
Bring a gel for the end of the bike - I forgot it at home and there weren't any on the bike course.
Transition 2
  • 02m 22s
Comments:

I ran past where I was supposed to rack my bike. Every other time I went by there, my bright yellow bike stuck out and I knew where my stuff was.
I forgot to put my racing number on when I left the T2 area, but I wasn't DQ'd.
My legs felt better than I thought they would when I started the run.
What would you do differently?:

Segregate my swimming, bike and run items - my racing number was under my wetsuit and I forgot it when I left.
Run
  • 25m 28s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

The legs were a bit stiff in the beginning, but not as bad as I was expecting. They loosened up after a few minutes (also coincident with when I started sucking down a gel).
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around until I found my wife and daughter.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I forgot how to swim.

Yeah!  Another "official triathlete"!   Great job on your first race.  It's a lot more fun with such a big BT crowd!  Can hardly wait for Boulder Peak!

Congratulations on your first race! You did great! You must have felt like you were flying on the bike after finally ditching the hybrid

Hey, your first tri is always sort've a hit or miss thing.  Sounds like you did great!  And, you finished, which is the important part.

You did so great.  You are officially a triathlete now.

It sucks the swim was so horrible for you.  My diagnosis and prescription is a couple of open water swims with Cathy, then at least 1 stroke & stride before Boulder Peaks!  You will defeat the swim.  No worries!

Thanks again for the great hospitality!  You guys are AWESOME!

Great job, Erik! Even though I have a swimming background, my first two OW swims in races were horrible and scary, but now I kinda like it! It'll come, just practice a lot! Once you get that swimming nailed, though, you are gonna be unstoppable! Great bike and run splits!

Congratulations, TRIATHLETE!!  You did it!!!!!!

My very first tri swim was a shocker too...I felt like I had never swam before and had to rest a lot.  It will get better!!

Congrats again, Erik!

You really did AWESOME for your first tri!  I could tell you horror stories about mine.

In addition to what I said before, if you practice O/W swimming, build on your already rock solid bike and run...you will be a force for your NEXT race.

Thanks for all of your support everyone!!! If it's true that what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger, I should be pretty much toughened up by the 1/2 IM!
