Total Time = 3h 20m 44s
Overall Rank = 123/467
Age Group = 50-54
Age Group Rank = 6/12
Pre-race routine:

Eat bage, drink sports drink, eat powerbar. Set up transition & bike. Mingle with teammates and take photos.
Event warmup:

Short jog,stretch, swim.
Swim
  • 38m 35s
  • 1600 yards
  • 02m 25s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started out good but goggles fogged up. After first buoy I couldn't see the next and had to slow down several times to look. I started passing people after the 3rd buoy. On the leg to shore I had no idea if I was going towards the swim exit since it was marked up the beach. I heard people yelling go left but didn't know if it was directed to me. Fortunately, I landed in the right spot.
What would you do differently?:

Spit in goggles and clean them up right before swim.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Didn't leave shoes on bike due to uphill start and short run to start.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 1h 35m 54s
  • 25 miles
  • 15.64 mile/hr
Comments:

this was tough. It was hard to judge race effort since I didn't know the course. I held back a little on the first loop. The uphills were slow and downhills fast, except there were a lot of turns so I couldn't build up that much speed.
What would you do differently?:

Attack harder on second loop.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Had to stop and pee, lucky the rest room was right there.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 1h 06m 15s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 10m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

My right calf hurt from the start, even after all the PT. I knew it would be a long run because my pace was slow. The steep hills, up & down, didn't make it feel any better. My left thigh cramped at about mile 2-1/2, probably from favoring the right leg. I stopped and walked 2 x's for about 20-30 seconds each time. I figure my pace was probably 45 sec to 1 min slower than normal.
What would you do differently?:

Better stretching routine during training to prevent injuries.
Post race
Warm down:

Not much, some slow walking. Took shoes off because my left heel was sore and discovered a BIG blister.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injury.

Event comments:

Great venue. Volunteers extremely friendly and helpful. Packet pick up very disorganized and slow, but locale, volunteers, and post race made up for it.

Sharon & I met Flyboy at the pre-race party Saturday night. It is great meeting up with other BT'ers at these races.

Course: 2 loops. Lots of uphills & downhills & turns. Uphills were short, except one 1/2 mile very steep one. Tough course, especially for us with no hills to train on. Had to navigate one 90 deg turn off main road onto golf cart path going downhill, immediately followed by a 90 deg turn thru the tunnel, followed by a very steep uphill. This section was at the turn around but very dangerous & slow. Flyboy flew by me on the bike and I couldn't catch up!

It was great meeting you guys Bob!  You had a great race, especially since you were injured...strong work!  Hope your leg heals up and you can get back at it soon.

Great job honey!  I'm so proud of how well you did considering how much training you missed out on.  Love ya.

Hey Rob,
Well at least you had an uneventful race compared to Sharon. Did you fly past her while she was fixing her flat? That's crazy you two got almost the same time! Great sounding post-race food- Outback Steakhouse sounds delish. Nice pics too. Glad you enjoyed your vacation. Welcome back to the monsoon season here.

I was going so fast I didn't see her. I was afraid of being caught on the run, especially at my slow pace!
