I wish my girlfriend/best friend from college's birthdays weren't this weekend because I would for sure be doing this race.

Good luck to everyone.

Aww... come on.  You don't want to swim in that refreshing 58 degree water?

It is a great race.  Beautiful views if you can pull your head up long enough to look at them.

So, having never done this race before, but knowing what the hills are like out there...Given the option of heavy TT bike vs lightweight road bike what would you all go with?

I believe a TT bike unless going up a constant 6% grade will be faster assuming the usuals -bike fits and you can ride areo etc etc

I dunno tough call knowing the area. 1st of all I've never ridden the race and never ridden the course. If you can climb better on the road bike then stay in the drops in the downhills I think you could come up ahead. I suck at climbing on my tri bike. I just don't like climbing on the aero bars and find that I'm a lot faster on my road bike (I tend to climb out of the saddle a good bit too). I think I would most likely take my road bike but I think it's a big toss up to what you feel most comfortable climbing on.

I did a quick check of the race last year from my Garmin.  It was a total of 1434 ft elevation gain and almost the exact same decent over the 17 miles.  Frankly, it is basically roller after roller and then a nice big 1 miler at about 4% grade half way through.  Might be better to use the lighter road bike.  Just my opinion.

I heard that you need to bring two pairs of running shoes, even if you're doing the triathlon because the swim often gets canceled. Is this true?

If the swim gets canceled, does everyone just do the same duathlon course?

Both bikes fit, there's just a significant (5lbs or so) weight difference between the two.

No idea.  Did it last year and heard nothing about that.

I don't think they've cancalled in the swim since 2004 or 2005. They shortened the swim in 2006 I believe but still held it. The water will be ball numbing cold.

I'm racing the DU for the first time this year. The opening portion is a down a hill and then up a hill.

Let me just put it this way. I'm running a Tribike, disc, 808, and latex tubes and I've ridden the old and new course numerous times. I didn't race last year but did ride the course. They've made a slight modification this year but nothing major.

Not doing the race this year.  To chime in as I've done it several years ago.  I have both a road bike and a tri bike.  I would run the tri bike with a similar setup to R2F just with an 808 in back as I don't have a disc.  The big question for R2F is are you busting out the new Felt for the race?

The water wasn't too bad last year.  I believe it was 58 or 60.  Fortunately, it is calm as glass.  Definitely makes you swim faster to get out of it.

I'm doing Galena as my first tri. I've been a runner/cyclist for years, but got serious about the swim part over the winter.  I'm excited!  Good question about the road/TT bike.  I'm about to buy a TT bike, but don't want to rush it.  I think I 'm going to ride on my road bike.  Ball numbing cold huh?

The water can be if you don't have a wet suit.  I would HIGHLY recommend getting one if you don't have one already.

Completed the bike course twice this weekend and I must say it was my hardest bike ride ever! Galena will be my very first tri, so I wanted to see what these hills were all about before the race. Loaded up my Garmin data when I got home and the route looked like a sine wave...one hill after the next. The mile long climb was pretty terrible! Ended up riding about 45 mile through those hills...we got lost a couple of times. : ) All in all it was a beautiful and challenging course. I think I will do just fine in my first tri...provided I survive the swim. lol

Did you do the ride on a tri bike or road bike?  Just curious...

Do you happen to have any grades of the different hills? Anything you could put up would be awesome!

I did it on my road bike (cannondale CAAD 9 5) got up to 40mph down some of the hills. A cople of people in the group had tri bikes and were ahead of the pack. Not sure if it was because of the bikes or because they were in just better shape. : ) As far as the % grade change, my watch showed and average of 8-10% grade change with a couple of %20 changes. I'm not really sure how correct this is. Bascially be perpared to ride up and down hills non stop.

Crazy.  And then run 4 miles after all the hills on the bike.  Can't wait.  Surprised
