So here are the challenge ideas for July.  It looks like the brick challenge idea is out because too many people are concerned about injury, and there are so many races going on this month.  But alot of people have thrown out some good ideas, so let's vote and make a decision!

Here are some guidelines based on other's feedback:

  • 7-8 person teams - balanced roster with people who are training for various distances on each team, or age-group
  • Charity Focus just like June (pledge before the challenge, losers give 100%, winners give min of 50% of the pledge).  Winners decide the charity.
  • In order to prevent overtraining, percentage of goal does not matter. Only attainment of goal. For instance, the team that wins has the most % members who got to their goal, not the highest avg % of goal.  This would also work if we were competing as individuals
  • For Tri challenge: Set goals for all 3 sports. If you hit 95% of your swim, 80% of your bike, 100 of your run then your TRI goal attainment would be 92%

I think an all 3 sports (not brick) challenge is the next logical step in these challenges. Just set a goal for each and average the percent attainment.

Tri - Coed Teams.  I do all three already, but need to get into the pool more.  I think this will be a good motivator.

This'll be the first challenge that I partake of.

Just a question (and thanks for doing this MandiGayle), aren't AG teams co-ed teams? Oh, I think I figured it out. Non-AG, co-ed teams would be determined at a later date, right?

The general consensus seemed to be that if we were doing teams, people wanted to try something other than the men vs. women teams. That way the teams are the same size and possibly smaller (more than 2 teams.) So teams can either be grouped by age (and thus co-ed) or have several teams with mixed (and thus evenly distributed) training goals. Make sense? Good question, Lynda.

I'm in too!  Especially since my Tri is July 17th and I'm afraid I'll lose motivation after that!

Sounds good to me..

I voted Tri co-ed teams.. but I'd like for the teams to be small and have multiple teams.. if there is a way to do that easily..

I am in. My volume will be lower due to tapering, but I would love to sign up. June's challenge got me out the door when my own motivation was lacking.

I like the team idea, that way we get to know other people a little better than the little groups we are all in. As long as the teams are picked out of a hat and you can`t pick your own team. That makes us learn about others involved with BT, kind of a social case as well as a team effort.

I'm all for that idea. It allows me to [1] get involved in a challenge (which really helps my training), and [2] follow my tri-plan (Hybrid of Herricks' IM and 1/2IM plans) -- which also greatly helps my training.

I can look at the plan, run some numbers, set some goals, and set out to reach them.

I'm up for a tri-challenge. I'll be focusing on the Tour de Tucson (60 mile bike or possibly 110 mile)in November, but if I slack off now in my swimming I'm afraid I'll lose everything I've learned since February. Running has been a part of my bike cross-training for a long time, so I should be able to keep that up.

Sounds great. Thanks for going with it!

Got a question. I had brought up the brick idea rather selfishly cuz I can't run for another month. So, would you count me in if my run goal remains at zero, but the bike and swim are entered? Actually, I do have one race july 31 which would put my run in only at 5K. My PT said absolutely no running until the race. I will be doing elliptical machine.

thanks!

One suggstion I have is have goals set by time not distance.

I do ows and have no clue how far I go...I don't have a gps HRM so when I run I don't know how far I go. Most training plans including the one I get, go by time not distance. Everyone has a watch!

This sounds like lots of fun...how are teams going to be put together?

This is a good point. Same as Kathy I focus my training on time rather than miles. I do keep log of distances for most of the time, but it is isn't as important as the time and intensity that I need to spend training. What we could do is just determine your goal in hrs rather than miles.

I'm game for a tri challenge.  I like the co-ed teams idea too.  It will bring the taunts to a whole new level.

I definetly want to be included in this month. My Tri is 1st week in August and I'm going to need some help getting through the next 4 week. Voted for tri-coed-teams

I'd try the tri challenge this month as long as it doesn't matter how small my goals are. I look at other people's logs and realize they train in a week the amount I can squeeze in in a month! I have my first ever tri July 31st (are you doing Danskin Nikki?) so I need some motivation to be sure I am ready!
