Total Time = 3h 09m 32s
Overall Rank = 467/620
Age Group = 55-59
Age Group Rank = 14/19
Pre-race routine:

Up and out of bed at 5:00AM for breakfast. Got cleanded up and sat around waiting for time to leave. Had all my gear ready the night before. Five neat little piles of stuff on the living room floor. Packed up headed out for coffee and get to the race site. Nothing terribly exciting this morning except that I was very nervous for some reason.
I had picked up my race kit on Saturday and found out there were a lot more competitors than I originally thought.
Event warmup:

Set up transition. went for a run (10 min). stretched out the legs. Put on the wet suit and headed to the beach for a swim warm up. did about 300M warm and didn't even self warm :) Got pysched for the mass start. 620 people for the mass start.

Swim
  • 32m 44s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 11s / 100 meters
Comments:

Mass start and it was a riot. I had a great time. Got kicked several times elbowed a few times but probably kicked and threw a few elbows myself. It was soooo exciting. The race to the first buoy was so much fun. I loved it. Both frustrating and exciting. I'm looking forward to my next mass start already. Overall a great swim for me. The time included the 120M run down the beach for the second lap and about 100 m up hill run to the transition site. My overall swim time would have been considerably lower than stated above. Likely under 2.00 minutes per 100 m.
4 minutes off last years time
What would you do differently?:

Maybe start a little closer to the front. I could have gone a little faster if I had been able to draft behind some faster swimmers. Overall I was very happy with the swim.
Transition 1
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

Overall a smooth transition. No issues at all.
last years t-1 2:12. I think the difference was in the placement of the timing mat. It was slightly closer to the swim finish this year.
What would you do differently?:

Take off my swim goggles.
Bike
  • 1h 26m 52s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 18.03 mile/hr
Comments:

head wind going out but felt good. kept a good cadence but maybe too low a gear. felt good on the way out but the hills were once again my nemesis on the way back. I carried good speed into the hills but dropped gears too quickly and had to pump my way up them. Coming back on the flat was great. Tailwind and I felt like I was flying down the road. At least until several people with tri bike literally blew past me. damn those good bikers :) 2 minutes faster than last year
What would you do differently?:

Train more
Transition 2
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

very good transition.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe take off my swim goggles.
Run
  • 1h 06m 2s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

Very hot by the time we got to the run.The sun was blazing down. I looked at my watch leaving transiton and knew I had to do a PB to get under 3 hours which was my target time for the race. Also as I was leaving tranistion I felt something bouncing around my neck and realized I was still wearing my swim goggles. Took them off and was going to throw them towards the fence but didn't want to lose them. Tucked them into my race belt and kept going. I realzed about 3 K into the run this was not going to be my day for a running PB. I was tired already. As I wasn't going to hit my goal I moved to the second goal which was beating last years time. Overall considering how tired my body felt the time wasn't that bad. I still did better than the previous year. 2:30 faster than last year.
What would you do differently?:

Take my swimm goggles off in the first transiton. I am blaming my non PR run on carrying all the extra weight of my swim goggles. They probably slowed me down on the bike too. (wind resistance).
Train better.
Post race
Warm down:

poured water over my head. drank some . wandered around a bit and talked to some of the other peeps from the tri club.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor training habits. With coaching the Tri clinc we had I simply did not put in enough time for my own training. No excuses.

Event comments:

another very well run race. The only thing I would like to see differently is to have a single loop for the swim. The lake is easily big enough to handle it.

Great job Rob.  For sure if you had taken the goggles off you would have had faster transitions and bike : )

Awesome with the goggles!! That will make for some great photos!!

Congratulations on a fabulous race. You rocked! I hate it when those fast cyclists whiz by me too, but you had a great split!

Way to go!!!!!!!!

Great race, Rob!  Looks like you gave as good as you got in the mass start chaos, and had fun too.  Congrats on besting your times from last year!

Rob, great, great job on the race and the PR!  Mass swim start?  I guess you'd better start searching for an IM if you like those!

You had me ROFLMAO, thinking of you wearing your swim goggles through the whole bike and through T2, until I re-read and saw that they were dangling on your neck!

Great job!  I hear you on the hills...they kill me too!

It is a lot easier if you lift your goggles over the top of your head to get them off vs. trying to pull them down over your body.  They don't get stuck on the nect that way!

Congrats on improving your time!

I'm glad Kim clarified that you had the goggles on around your neck.  I missed that and kept asking myself, "he didn't really wear his goggles the whole time did he?"
