drew3623 - 2010-08-23 6:00 AM Yes it is horrible for you.. I have a degree in Exercise Physiology. During school and in studies I have read, one can of beer can lower testosterone by 15-17% for 3 days. Testosterone is the major muscle building hormone. So you very well could possibly feel sluggish the next day after 2 beers.

It also shuts down the bodies normal process of burning Macronutirents for energy. Alcohol is toxic waste to the body. So once consumed, the body stops buring fats, carbs and pros to rid of the alcohol. All macronutrients are then stored as fats until all alcohol is fully digested and disposed of.

I do not drink and alcohol and I encourage all of my clients to do the same.

p.s I know I will probable get chewed out from the "anything in moderation is ok" crowd. I am just completely agains drinking.

Oh yeah.. It doesnt matter if it is beer or wine or liquor.. Its the alcohol itself and not the calories.

Hope this helps!

You may or may not be right, but life is way to short not to enjoy it while I can.  I love good food and good liquor.  Next thing, you should take away my motorcycle because it's dangerous, my sports car because it's bad for the environment....I guess I just don't understand the teetotaler mindset.

As for training, I know it has an impact, but based on my extensive research it's not significant.

I don't think he is saying that he doesn't recommend it to his clients or himself because it's dangerous, but trying for his clients to maximize their training gains as much as possible.

All he did was state that "alcohol is horrible for you" and that he's "completely against drinking."  Those aren't statements just for people aiming to maximizing their fitness gains.

Moreover, he never stated what he did for a living or what kind of clients he has.  As far as I know, he's a lawyer or a grocery store clerk.  I have degrees in physics and nuclear engineer but do neither for a living...

Anyway, moving on.  I'm finishing up my gin & tonic, and heading to bed to get some sleep so I can work out in the morning! (it's 10pm here)

Didn't read a thing thus far on this thread, I can only guess where it might have veered to and from.

But yes. Alcohol is poison, our bodies do not like it, the consumption of which is a calculated risk I enjoy from time to time, just like fried cheese curds.Kiss

TheEdge - 2010-08-22 8:44 AM Seems the topic is kinda deviating form what I was asking. I mean, I can eat a steak, butter, bacon, whatever that may not be good for me health wise, but feel fine the next morning. But drink two beers and my body knows it. That is why I was asking about it being worse (poison was a word I used, but not literally "real" poison)  because it did make me feel bad the next day, whereas other things that may be bad for me such as fatty foods, do not.

It's all about quantity.  An order of mozzarella sticks, a 22-oz porterhouse, baked potato, salad, and a slice of cheesecake has a significantly larger impact on me the next day then a couple of beers or glasses of wine.  On the otherhand, 10 beers has a bigger impact than a more normal grilled chicken breast, steamed vegies and rice.

I have tried all of these combos and many more iteration on them and long ago decided that Oscar Wilde had it right, "Everything in moderation, including moderation."

I would also like to see said study or even a remote abstract.

Yes, I am going to give you anecodtal evidence, but it the above was even remotely true, then I would not have had beers and wine with Crowie and Miranda a few weeks back.  These are athletes at the top of their game and if it was to the detriment you state, they would not partake...a lot!

Hang around the after party at a big tri and the largest consumers of alcohol are the pros  and Bryan!

poison: 1. A substance that causes injury, illness, or death, especially by chemical means.
            2. Something destructive or fatal.

This is all semantics.  I think we can all agree on the fact that alcohol, when consumed in extreme excess, is a poison.  That said, salt, water, sugar, heck, cholesterol-laiden foods, could be considered "poisons" by different people.

For those who can't control the amount of alcohol they consume, sure, call it poison.  Whatever works to keep it away.

I certainly don't mean to add fuel to the 'poison' fire -- I've already said my piece about that.

Yes, there are suggestive studies.  I think that it is FAR from clear what, if any, the implications for training are.  I suspect there are little to none.

A few studies:

"Effect of Alcohol (Ethanol) Administration on Sex-Hormone Metabolism in Normal Men"

Moderate alcohol consumption over time --> slightly lower plasma testosterone levels, among other things.

"Effect of ethyl alcohol on plasma testosterone level in mice"

  Same story, but in mice.

"Effects of Alcohol on Plasma Testosterone and Luteinizing Hormone Levels"

Takes lower plasma testosterone levels for granted, but disputes the mechanism by which alcohol lowers it.

"Suppression of testosterone production by ethyl alcohol. Possible mode of action"

Similar story to previous, but in mice.

"Effects of acute alcohol intake on pituitary-gonadal hormones in normal human males."

Lots of alcohol --> bigger decrease is plasma testosterone

"Effect of Moderate Alcohol Consumption on Plasma Dehydroepiandrosterone Sulfate, Testosterone, and Estradiol Levels in Middle-Aged Men and Postmenopausal Women: A Diet-Controlled Intervention Study"

Moderate consumption over time (3 weeks) --> slight decrease is plasma testosterone levels (around 7%)

And most importantly:

"Effect of acute postexercise ethanol intoxication on the neuroendocrine response to resistance exercise"

The post-race party is pretty much fine.

Yes, but I also think life is a buffet so why only eat gruel and drink water.  I just got back from a 4 day trip to Napa celebrating a friend's 50th birtdday.  Good food and wine = Much Yumm and Much Fun.  And I trained everyday too!

http://www.healthchecksystems.com/alcohol.htm

That site would be better with references.

References or no, it is a pretty balanced article and definitely represents the general consensus among public health authorities.  It's particularly important for women to recognize that what is considered relatively safe consumption for men (not more than 2 drinks per day) is considered risky for women--and the article specifically addresses one of the several reasons for that.  Also important to be cognizant of the effect of alcohol on fat burning...for people trying to lose weight, not all calories are created equal and calories from alcohol carry a bit of a "double whammy" because of the impact on liver function.

I understand that.  There were a few things I'd like to read up on more closely and that's tough without references.

I'm aware of beer potentially decreasing testosterone level but it is the dose quoted I am concerned about. "in studies I have read, one can of beer can lower testosterone by 15-17% for 3 days".

12 oz of beer in a healthy male will be completely metabolized in 1 hour. The doses used in these studies are much higher. I also believe that the negative effects of beer come from the hops as much as the Etoh. Wine may be a better option

I LOVE beer but it does make me feel like crap the next day. It feels like I had poison even if I only had 2 or 3. I usually can't sleep because my joints ache and I'm tired and cranky the rest of the day. Most of the time it's not worth it. I wish I was one of those people that could get up and run after drinking.
