Does anyone swim as little as I do in the year of your ironman?  My IM is 30 days away and i've only swam 27,000yds this entire year.  And 4200 of that was from two 1/2IM swims.  I just can't stand swimming unless it's during a race.

2010 totals
Bike:175h 57m 51s  - 3388.81 Mi
Run:100h 43m 38s  - 658.13 Mi
Swim:11h 30m 34s  - 27361.77 Yd

If I swam that little I probably wouldn't make the swim cut off in an IM.

I swam more than you have all year last month, but suspect your IM swim will be a good 20+ minutes faster than me.

I have swam less than you because of the same feeling that you have.

Don't begrudge the swim, though, because it's one of the best workouts you'll get, and, if you change up the workouts or find a swim coach or workout with someone else, you'll find yourself liking the swim.

Stay positive.

Hey John,

I swam about 10K more than you did all year, last month alone.  I took a quick look at your last RR and based off your time, it doesn't appear you're a natural swimming or grew up swimming.  There are a lot of former collegiate swimmers or lifetime swimmers that can do very minimal swimming and still pull off great times, but once again, my guess is you're not one of those people. Smile

Do you want to become a faster swimmer?  You may be perfectly content with your current swimming ability.  If that's the case, I think you'll be OK swimming as little as you do.  However, I think you could greatly benefit from some more time in the water focusing on improving your technique.  Another thing to consider is its very difficult to be good at something you do not enjoy.  This may not be possible for you, but next time you're in the water, think about the things you do enjoy about swimming or how it benefits you.  Also, you may want to consider a Swim MP3 player or something other type of gadget that will help you enjoy your time in the water.

Nice.  More time for biking and running I guess which can pay off as long as your not trashed by the time you get to T1.

As long as you don't exert that much effort than that's fine.  It's one thing to swim 2.4 in 70 minutes and another thing to swim it in 70 minutes and feel fresh like you have done zero work as you get on the bike.  That is the big difference in my mind.  I don't care so much about 5 minutes or so in either direction on the swim but I don't want to feel taxed after and pay for it later in the day.

I saw IM and thought Individual Medley.  Good luck on your swimming, you'll need it.

For my HIM in 2 weeks I think I've swam maybe 5 miles in the last 3 months.  I hate swimming too (but I'm decent at it).  Every now and then I jump in, splash out 1.2 miles and look at my time.  It's usually the same or a few seconds better than the last.

In my last sprint I was 5th fastest in my division and top 30 overall in my swim.

I know I could get better if I swam more but I feel my run could use the work more.

Yep.  But of course if I trained more I could probably be better than a 1:39 IM swimmer:

2010 totals
Bike:127h 20m 52s  - 2288.25 Mi
Run:86h 37m 24s  - 505.39 Mi
Swim:12h 03m 31s  - 30504.49 M

About 30% of my swim volume is from races.

I'm pretty much a minimalist when it comes to swim training, but for different reasons. Looking at my log though, you still do a lot less than me. I know there are a lot of people who hate swimming, but its been my experience that when people become better swimmers, they start enjoying the swim workouts more. Just a thought. Good luck in Florida

yeah I never swam in my life before 2007. I swam a ton (for me) in 2008 and got my pool 1.2 mile swim down to around 30 min. Fastest OWS in a race was about 37 min. I barely swam last year and did the IM swim in 1:24. Not fast at all, but not slow. I figured I would focus on the bike and run and be happy with a 1:20 IM swim if I could improve greatly on the bike. It has paid off. I did a 6:30 at Louisville last year and I plan on doing an easy 5:40 at Florida this year. That's 50 min...could do that in the pool. Maybe in 2012 at my next IM I'll work more on swimming since my bike is greatly improved. My problem with swim MP3 is that I have to wear ear plugs and only certain ones fit. Any advice on that?

Yes, but like Colin said, they tend to be former competitive swimmers, or people who have already logged a massive base sometime, somewhere.

If you can make the cutoff, don't blow the rest of the race, and that's okay with you ... who cares?

Good luck!

If you don't enjoy it, then why do it?  Hobby=fun!  Of course, it could be like golfing.  I hate hitting out of a sand trap, but I still practice it because I enjoy the sport altogether.  But the bottom line is to structure your training in such a way that brings you the most enjoyment.

My logs aren't accurate, but I'm a minimalist when it comes to swimming.  I'm trying to spend more time in the pool, but even when I enjoy individual workouts from time to time, overall I get no enjoyment out of swimming.  Hence, after this next IM I will be a duathlete and never swim again!

Johners:

I didn't like running, either.....until I put the time in.  Now, I love it.

FWIW.....TJ's IM swim time (I'm pretty sure) is <50min. on that training.  I can't comprehend that.

I used to hate cycling. Well, actually I loved getting on a bike and going, but when it came down to sports bra jersey lube sunscreen check tyres pump tyres saddlebag phone nutrition fill bike bottles dangit clean out bike bottles first

etc. etc. etc.

I'd get so frustrated that just getting out the door seemed to take longer than the ride itself.

Congrats on your improvements and there's no question that for having a faster overall time in an IM, the return on investment of your time is typically a lot higher when you spend time improving your bike and run.  However, as others posted, having proper technique and being at least a decent swimmer can go along way on race day.  The most important benefit to some more swimming is it should help you come out of the water a fresher/less fatigued.  Nonetheless, by improving your swim technique you should also see a faster time while most likely using less energy than you are now.

Clearly you doing a lot of things right or you wouldn't be making these kind of improvements.  However, as mentioned before, I think you would see some gains from more time in the pool.  This may not come with a significantly lower swim time, but will prepare you to reach your bike and run goals.

Best of luck in Florida!

Sorry forgot to answer you on this.  Unfortunately, I do not have any recommendations on this.  I have the SwiMP3, which definitely doesn't cover your ears like some of the traditional ear plug style headphones do.   Anyone else got any ideas?

I like swimming; I hate the time commitment.  I can fall out of bed out my front door to run or bike.  But my local pool is not convenient to me and the morning hours are super early.  So yeah, it's frustrating.

But I'm also in the category of people who have WAY more to gain on the bike and run.  So I'm only doing swimming on minimal-maintenance mode this year.

Dang.....I feel bad for you guys.  Swimming is so natural to me, I require very little training to have the endurance to swim the IM distance...with a MOP time.  I'm shooting for a 1:05-1:10 in my first though.   That will probably require 2 days a week in the pool.

I definitely swam less than you this past year. My schedule didn't allow me to get much of anything in and I swam around 15,000 meters. I finished my IM swim this year in 1:24:xx. I have absolutely no swimming background whatsoever, other than a horrible fear of water, if that can be considered a background.

YMMV.
