Access my basic information Includes name, profile picture, gender, networks, user ID, list of friends, and any other information I've shared with everyone. Don't make much sense to me.  |

I thought I was unsearchable.  I want to delete my FB account, but I used to live across the country and it's the only way that I have access to those friends. I guess I could go back to email... There is no way to hide that information. Facebook attempts to explain why they do this here. Allthough they don't really explain it, they just say they do it that way... because. I know a few people who have listed fake first and/or last names so no one will find them. They only tell a select group of people their "facebook name" so they aren't bombarded with requests from people they don't want to be found by. Edit: as for adding co-workers or not, I'd suggest ignoring the friend request and if asked, explain that you have a personal policy against friending co-workers (nothing personal). And then suggest that the two of you connect on a professional networking site like LinkedIn. On a slight hijack, I found it hilarious when the status update started going around that "OMG OMG Facebook is PUBLISHING your CELL PHONE information! Click here and here and you can see ALL YOUR FRIENDS CELL PHONE NUMBERS!!!! SO WRONG!!" to which I just wanted to respond... "duh it's because each and every one of those people has their cell phone numbers listed on their profile. For pete's sake, Facebook merely aggregating the information YOU put out there. She tried changing her settings, but I've given up. Maybe there's a Facebook Bermuda triangle. |

That even gives your address. GASP! People just need to think before they post info. And manage your security setting correctly. If managed correctly you can share all you want with people YOU want to and it will never go beyond that. Also, not sure what the big deal about being "found" is all about. If you get an invite from someone you do not know or do not want to share your info with then just ignore them. |

I recently ran a project for a large corporation based on a law which became enacted in the commonwealth of Massachusetts. There are 27 other states considering similar legislation. In this case, we had to strictly define what is personal privacy. Using the verbiage in the written law (from MA) we defined it to be a person's first name and last name in conjunction with a bank account number, drivers license number or social security number. The underlying basis for selecting this type of data is due to the ability of a person to use it for stealing a person's identity. Most of what Facebook shares, is confidential information. This is data which a person may wish or not wish to share with others but cannot lead to identity theft. This data is defined as data which can be found through public record. Name, address, phone numbers, etc is confidential but I can't do much with it. |

If you search for my first and last name, you'll only find me if we have mutual friends. So there is a way to do it. Being "found" is a big deal to me because I don't necessarily want my students seeing my profile pics. |
