569 | Subject: Total 10k frustration I was on VC last week with my wife on Grand Cayman.. Was doing nothing but eating, drinking, and relazing. The last day of out trip my wife found a local 10k and enrolled me as a "surprise". She did not tell me until the night at about 9 over a huge steak and a bottle of wine. I was like great but WTF to myself.. The race started at 7:00 am.. It was the worse preformance of my life.. It took me 69 min to run the 10k race.. I can in with people whe were walking.. Normally I run about an 8:30 or so... I know my wife meant well but the whole experience was so dissapointing. There was a time not too long ago that I could not run at all and run a 5K on a 7:30 pace. I dont know what happened to me... |

Champion 7233 | Subject: RE: Total 10k frustration assuming you've been training before this (before vacation), i'd let it go and not worry about it. In no particular order, things that could have just on the vacation knocked that time down: drinking large amounts of food some weight gain(prob not much though) being outside/in the sun all day whatever else you were doing activity wise head not in the game. If you have not been training before the vacation this will have an impact as well. If that was it, let it go, it happens, we all have bad races, take what you learned from it and move on, not much else you can do and no sense crying over spilled milk at this point. |

There is a town on the Island called Hell... that brigns up another point, are you coming from somewhere cold? what was the course like? I go down to FL every winter with my family for a week (from ohio or PA), and we go around new years. coming from the land of snow and ice, even with it being dead flat there and lower humidity in the winter, my runs are EASILY a solid minute per mile slower with the change in weather. |

NH | Subject: RE: Total 10k frustration You ran a 10k in Grand Cayman. Forget your time and just enjoy that fact that you did it. As everyone has already said, there are a ton of reasons why your time would be awful. There's about 1000 triathletes on this site who would probably trade what they did last week for a 10k on Grand Cayman at any pace! |

How cool that she thought up a surprise for you like that... And this is what makes me different than 90% of people on this site... but so be it if you don't always PR or have an "off" race. My mentality is to just go out and have fun and enjoy the scenery - especially on a vacation and surprise race like that. It doens't always have to be a competition. (flame suit on) |

(flame suit on) i for one, agree with you, i do a few races a year with the intention of NOT going for a PR, and doing something absurd/fun with it. In fact, on oct first i started letting my beard grow. It comes in fiery red, think viking style. Its funny because right where it meets my hairline my hair turns dark brown in a very exact line. I'm letting it grow until st patricks day, where i will be running a 5 miler dressed as a leprechaun, and i'll be carrying a box of lucky charms to pass out along the race course. I have the costume ready. green vest with big shiny buttons, green knickers, and a green hat. its going to be amazing. |

I just always like to run/swim/bike fairly well considering everything. This race was just so way off... I am lucky to have a great wife and to do a 10k on Grand Cayman.. But the race results sucked... And that does matter to me.. At least a little... |

Regardless of the scenery, location, etc., you still want to be "competitive". I am running a turkey trot with my son tomorrow (his first). I want him to enjoy the race, and finish within his target time. To do that, I am going to have to pace him at a clip that is approx. 1 min/mile slower than I am used to for a 5k. Knowing that, I have been preparing myself all week, telling myself that I don't have to look at the time, this race isn't for me, etc. etc. |

Champion 6962 Atlanta, Ga | Subject: RE: Total 10k frustration I did something very similiar this past Saturday in Costa Rica. 3 of us were walking along the beach and came upon a finish line banner. We found out that in 45 minutes the 10K was about to start. Even though we had just finished lunch, we paid our $20 (10,000 colones) and ran back to our hotel. Got our gear on and had a GREAT time. Great time NOT meaning on the clock but rather that we raced a local 10K in Costa Rica and have the technical T and medal to prove it! THAT is what you will remember. Too many times we as athlete's need to get over ourselves and just run/race. Too much useless energy goes into preping. You can only peak 2-3x per year. Those are where you expect PR's. In Thailand, while on Vacation you expect to have an awesome time and brag to those of us that got to run it in the rain/sleet/snow/smog of a US city. Congrats on a great 10K!!!! |

Extreme Veteran 529 Harbor City/Torrance/Carson | Subject: RE: Total 10k frustration Like what others said, let it go. That's the same reason why people like myself and most of us (assumption) doesn't run on Sunday mornings after a Saturday night of drinking. I wait until the afternoon and do my runs if there's one on schedule. |

How many of your faster races were done in these temps? I know I can be up to a minute per mile slower at 85° than at 45°. |

Veteran 345 Houston, TX | Subject: RE: Total 10k frustration And remember that not only did you get to do a 10K in Grand Cayman after a week of playing around - but there are still plenty of people here who train their butts off, don't drink or vacation and still would be happy to do a 10K in 69 minutes...my PR for a 10K is 64 minutes - and I train hard, don't party, eat super healthy, don't walk, etc. Be thankful that your worst is some people's best! |

Sometimes we just have to go out and run a race that isn't really racing. Heck, I'm running a Turkey Trot and due to all sorts of stuff, some planned, some not, I am no where near PR fitness so I'm just headed out for a run. It'll be a fun environment to be in for Turkey day. |

Champion 10018 , Minnesota | Subject: RE: Total 10k frustration I can sympathize a bit. I trained for months for a half marathon in January in Key West - I live in Minnesota. Needless to say, it didn't go very well. And I was prepped for it! It's nice to have one really bad race on your record to relieve the pressure in the future. It took me a long time to get over that, but now it's a funny story. I did a cross country 7-mile race this weekend that took me 1:45. Normally a 7 mile race would take me 70 minutes at most! No one looking at my results in Athlinks would know that I twisted my ankle 2 miles in, finished the race anyway, which included multiple creek crossings, muddy embankments (think pulling yourself out of a pool, but on mud with only one good ankle), running through corn fields, over hill and dale (literally!). I did the same race last year in 1:35 due to similar conditions, but no pain. Sometimes you just can't plan for things. |
