for the hygene thing, we have wipes at multiple locations, supposed to wipe down the equipment after each set. Most comply, but i've found the ones who don't would set off the "lunk" alarm.. guess they feel that they're either above the rules or think that we want their sweat rubbing off on us so we can get lunkified via osmosis or something..

My gym has dress code rules like that but they don't enforce them (or any of their other rules).  It is obviously a poorly managed place but the pool is always empty and open for lane swims all the time, in fact the whole place is usually so empty there is really no way you could offend anyone.  I have no idea how they are still in business really.

I toured a gym that had the same dress code but did not become a member.

This is just a ridiculous rule.  If it was for safety reason fine but this is so people feel comfortable.  Just another example of everyone being a winner IMO.

Well, this might a bit of an overkill, but after what I had witnessed today at the gym in the changing room I just want all the gym patrons be required to remain fully dressed at all times, including showers. Oh, my poor eyes... I'm scarred for life! Need to start seeing a therapist.

aquagirl - 2010-12-03 8:00 PM I thought I would check out the new gym that just opened up nearby. Gorgeous huge facility.
I asked for a tour and she began by showing me the too small pool. Too bad. Oh well......show me the rest of the gym while I am here.
She shows me the state of the art machines in a beautiful, vast, light filled setting. Yeah,  maybe I can just overlook the small pool? I was intrigued.
Until.......she tells me about the dress code. Huh? No tank tops or any such garment. T shirts MUST be worn. She proceeded to tell me this was so that all the members can feel "comfortable". They did not want certain "attitudes" developing, did not want members that are less fit to feel intimidated, did not want "big guys" in muscle shirts etc .

Personally, this is a deal breaker. I overheat VERY easily beacuse I do not sweat .
I always end up taking off my shocking , unacceptable tank top and just running in my equally shocking sports bra!

What do you think of this policy?
Does anybody belong to a gym with a dress code?

Discuss.

Please excuse me if I'm wrong but weren't you the one in a thread a while back that made a statement something like "C'mon guys, unless you have a Brad Pitt body no speedos allowed".  So you wish to make rules for dress codes at a race but can't deal with dress codes at a business establishment?

Ummmmm......I do not believe I said such a thing.

And I do not wish to make rules for dress codes anywhere, actually.
I am merely relating my experience with this establishment and asking people to discuss how they feel about such a policy. Simple.

Ummmmm.....ok, that's why I started off with "Please excuse me if I'm wrong"; someone in the past made that ridiculous statement and I wrongly thought it was you.
I honestly have no idea what the rules for dress code are in the gym I belong to.  I usually work out in BCG tops (Academy's version of underarmour) and on occasion a running singlet or tri top.  I've never been told anything.  I've seen ladies bearing their stomachs with sports bra type things so I guess that is ok also.

I guess I learn somthing new every day.

I didn't know that if a woman wore a T-shirt, it is a defense against men hitting on her...

It's been a while.  Someone should start one up with some new stories.

Obviously fitting a niche in the market. I had no idea such a niche existed. I can only imagine it reduces their potential client base but what do I know.

The dress code and the short pool make sense together.  They don't want anyone to feel bad so everyone has to cover up and they wouldn't want anyone to be intimidated by swimming so they make the pool short so it doesn't look so hard.  Plus, the short pool keeps serious swimmers from joining so they don't have to worry about anyone looking too good in a swimsuit.

The only people who will join will be unfit, overweight and clueless so they'll likely pay their monthly fees and never show up which means less wear and tear on the equipment and less staff needed.  The gym also will stay mostly empty most of the time which will encourage new members who are thinking they won't have to wait to use the machines.  They may get fewer members but with the decrease in overhead they'll still make money while looking all politically correct for serving the out of shape demographic.  Really, it's a brilliant marketing plan.
