Let's start one!

At the challenge of a friend, I'm giving up dairy for a week. I'm not sure what exactly is supposed to happen over the course of this week, but I figure I'm up for it.

To dairy or not to dairy? Pros & cons? Looking forward to hearing both sides.

I never thought I had issues with Dairy.   Then I married an asian lactose intollerant guy and realized I kind of quit eating most dairy after a while.   Then I realized I ate more rice than bread.  Then I noticed how AWFUL I felt when I did eat some dairy rich food.   Wheat too.   I have decided that, whaterver you call it, my body is happier without more than a little wheat or dairy.  I will still eat a sandwich now and again, and I eat a yogurt most mornings.   But we do not buy bread for the house, and I never drink milk.

I don't know if a week is long enough for you to know how you will react.   But keep us posted.

Seriously John, it's become clear that the threads I start are of no interest to you, and don't ask the same questions to which you would like to hear the answers. You would do well to just ignore them to the extent that it is possible with your responsibilities as a moderator.

If you're the type of person who drinks milk at dinner every night, or puts cheese on top of everything - it can be a great way to cut calories (I assume that is the motivation?).

Do you have tummy issues at all? Are you hoping to alleviate them?

Or is this just for fun - a random challenge?

Just for fun mostly. I actually love milk and dairy products and have no problems eating them, and have no GI or other issues after eating them. He said that cutting out dairy was a key component in his weight loss and weight maintenance, and since I have a goal of losing weight I figured I'd take his challenge to see if it made any difference.

hmmmm might could make ... i take it you're not slugging back fat-free or lowfat dairy products?

if you don't wind up replacing them with other fatty type dairy substitutes (some soymilks and tofutti ice cream and other dairy subs can have a lot of fat) ...

I'm the same with you on dairy, but almost all of it is in lowfat milk and yogurt. in the States I ate a long of string cheese, too. (low fat part skim mozzarella)

on a couple of occasions when I was having continuing tummy trouble without resolution in other ways, I cut out dairy for a few weeks actually, well, just because (kinda like you, a friend suggested it ...) the tummy trouble resolved, but there's no telling if it was cutting out dairy or just because dairy mighta irritated it and by removing it, my GI tract just restored itself. in any case after I resumed consuming dairy without any problems, on both occasions.

I am not a dairy hater but also don't buy what the Dairy Council tries to sell us.  I don't think kids NEED to drink milk, I don't think milk is good for you.  I do eat dairy - cream in coffee, cheese makes stuff yummy, love me some ice cream but not for nutritional value only for the yum factor.

My second child had a dairy intolerance, it takes 3-4 weeks to get dairy out of your system FYI.

ugh.  lactose intolerant since birth.  I always felt deprived growing up, but now that I'm an adult, i don't have to cut it out of my diet so save calories...  BUT, if I wanted to drop 5-10 pounds really fast, I could!

I've quit dairy for 4 - 6 months at a time in the past.  Now I'm a LEEEETLE bit lactose intolerant (never was before) and I can't drink skim milk (which was never an issue before).  HOWEVER, I was my very leanest (see bodybuilding photos in my album).  I'm absolutely convinced that it was the milk sugars that kept that last little layer of fat in my skin -- cutting dairy allowed me to get shredded.

I wouldn't expect to see anything...positive or negative...from a week.

I'm gonna try this one as a friend and I try going Vegan during Lent.  I am a cheese-aholic but am sensing a growing lactose intolerance with tummy issues and also beginning to feel the relative uneccesity of dairy in my life.  So I'm gonna give it a go.

Not sure I will be able to give up hard cheeses forever (the lowest lactose level of all cheese) but I think it will be worth the health benefit.

I sort of chuckle at the Vegetarians who shun meat b/c of the inhumane treatment of animals but chow down on dairy like no tomorrow.

My reaction too.  I can't think of anything in milk/dairy that would hang around that long.

And a near-freezing glass of milk is perfection.  Just...... perfection.

Wow!  I don't think I could do it.  I love cheese and yogurt.  I also love whole milk, but I don't drink it due to high fat content.  I do have tummy issues, but they aren't serious enough for me to even consider dropping my yogurt for any length of time.  If I didn't have my yogurt and occasional lowfat choco milk I would have to take a calcium supplement, because I don't eat enough leafy greens  to get my daily allowance.  I do eat almonds, but not that many.  Good luck.  Keep us posted!

CONS: hard cheeses have high fat content...
PROS: cazein (milk protein) keeps you longer full, as it has slower digestion...therefore the best possible thing is to eat low fat dairyes.
Moderate in hard cheeses, smart in high protein & low fat cheeses.

I would say your body and muscles would certainly get more minuses than pluses in your challenge week.

This is what breastfeeding women are commonly told when the pediatric GI docs ask you to eliminate dairy from your diet because they suspect your baby is intolerant of milk proteins.  This time frame also accounts for the dairy being eliminated from the baby, which obviously won't happen until after the last of it is eliminated from the mother.  I suspect the pediatricians are just being cautious so that women won't expect results over night.

you don't say??? that's good to know.
did you felt their cut off is the actual reason for your better result???? because, c'mon its milk and healthy things we're talking about...
on the other hand, I don't feel they bother me because I try to avoid high fat cheeses, and eat other stuff.
