Yeserday I went for a 2000 meter Open Water Swim in Lake Michigan followed by 5 hours of beach volleyball with some friends. Can you say burnt to a crisp? I used some spray on SPF30 but that didn't seem to help. Now I have to go back downtown today for the Cubs game and might get another touch of sun. Just venting. Going to get some stronger Sunscreen for today.

Not a bad idea to reaply sunscrean when exposed for extended periods or cover up with something light and breathable. Though I'm sure this isn't news :-)

stronger and make sure you reapply throughout the day, that stuff doesn't stay on forever no matter what the bottle says.

Have you tried Bullfrog sunscreen?  I think it is the best on the market...expensive but the best.  I use the Quick Gel formula.  It's not a lotion so it isn't sticky or oily.  It dries and you don't know it's there.  It's also waterproof.  I use it at all my tris and haven't been sunburned.

I'm trying to decide what's worse ...

[1] Having a terrible sunburn

or

[2] having to watch the Cubs.

------------------------------------------

I'm also a little burnt. Ran 2:30 with no shirt on and just my shorts and CARDINALS' visor.

If you find any lotion that does a good job of soothing please let me know.

To ease sunburn pain.  Apply dressings soaked in strong black tea, cold of course.  Lipton's tea (bags).  Do not do this is you have open blisters.

Call your doc and get some Blue Sulphadine Cream. It may even be over the counter in Illinois. I seem to remember that from a bad burn I got when I lived in Chicago.

Watching the Cubbies is a delightful experience, filled with historical significance. It is not, however, always pretty.

I've never tried this myself, but I have friends who swear by it. My mom swears by Boric acid compresses. Boric adic is a mild eye wash that you can buy at most pharmacies. Same procedure... add to lukewarm water, soak a cloth and apply. I know this works because she used it on us as kids.

As for sunscreen, I use the Kenisys spray on for my races, and usually it works well, but I do have to reapply it in T1 because much of it gets rubbed off by my wetsuit. And because I'm out on the bike course so long (working on that), I respray again in T2. But it only takes seconds and it worth it to not be crispy and sore the next day.

Sunscreen that is the best - Kinesys.  Doesn't rub off, and works really well.

Then, if you are prone to turning into a crispy crittur, get yourself a rash guard/surf shirt.  They are made to wear under a wetsuit or over a swim suit.  They protect against chafing, but more importantly, they are sun proof and will protect you from sunburn while you're in the water.  You want it to fit tightly, btw, like a swim suit, not like a T-shirt.

I second the 'frog. We use the spray kind. Awesome. Well worth the extra $.

I've heard that a layer of original Noxema also helps w/sunburn...

Sounds like a pretty awesome w-e in Chicago. I miss Lake Michigan. Have you gone to the Indiana or Michigan dunes lately?

Putting on Sun Smart lecturing cap!

Suncream needs to be reapplied regularly esp if you are in the water, or on the sand.

Just a side note SPF means Sun protection factor. it indicates the time you can stay in the sun without burning based on your complextion.

Here's a chart guide of the times and the factors.

But if you are going to be in the sun for a long period of time the only way to be sun safe is to cover up with a rashie or long sleeved shirt and hat and glasses!

Failing that if you do get burnt the best treatment is Aloe Vera Gel.  If you can get your hands on a real plant thats the best if not an Aloe vera gel from teh chemist. (little tip if you keep it in the fridge it feels even better when you put it on)

sorry for the rant I'll take my lecturing cap off now.  I live in a country with the highest Skin Cancer rates and have very fair skin so have learnt how to avoid sun burns.  its just too dangerous!

besides the topicals, I always take 2 aspirin (not tylenol) and drink a lot of extra water. It works wonders.

Thanks for the help. I used some SPF 45 today. Chicago is a great city when the weather is awesome. Burn isn't so bad tonight I think I'll live. By the way. I'd rather have sunburn than watch the Cubs. Its just too bad I'll be back at Wrigly on Friday-Sunday for the Cardinals Series. Still have to cheer for them though. Anyways, thanks again for all the suggestions.

One more home remedy if you can stand it....1/2 white vinegar and 1/2 cool (NOT ICE COLD) water.  Wring a washcloth in it, lay the cloth over the burn until the washcloth feels hot. Repeat, and repeat...stinks, but seems to draw the heat out.

That was mom's thing and I have to admit it works.    Personally I don't have the patience to sit still for that long so I stick to aloe vera.
