I am interested in the mental health benefits of doing triathlons, and I would like to know how many people are happier overall with their life since they started doing triathlons.

I, for one, have found a much greater degree of happyness/satisfaction with my whole life since I took up triathlon.

I selected "the same" only because I was doing an average of 3 marathons a year for several years prior to my foray into TRI.  That said, I would say that I am happier since I've started endurance sports all together.

I am so much happier since I started swimming, cycling, and running.  I don't think racing has made me any happier, even with good results. I would have to say just training in all three areas has made me a happier person, and in turn a 'better' person.

The physical & mental benefits of the training for triatholons has transformed me in the past year.  I feel 1,000 times better about myself physically/healthwise/lifestyle wise than I did 12 months ago when I started. The races are just the cherry on the sundae.

Most definitely!  I feel like at 40 (almost 41) I am in the best shape of my life--mentally, physically, emotionally and most of it has to do with my training.  Coming from a running background, adding cycling and swimming into the mix has breathed new life into my, well, life.  I love it.  I've never been happier.

For sure.....much happier.  I spend WAY more time outdoors and I've met some really awesome people, including my soon-to-be husband.

There are many things that contribute to happiness, and two of them are Health and having a passion for something you enjoy.

I had both of those things prior to my 1st Tri last year, so it hasn't changed my happiness, and switched my passions to a new sport.

all good.  my mid-life crisis is going well.

Yes. Definitely. I can come from a perspective of having done tri, took a year off, then getting back in this year. The year without it was tough. I love the sport, but the cirsumstances weren't really allowing me to participate at the level I desired. I'm back in it now.

Triathlon has given me so much, everything from good post-divorce therapy, to meeting some of the best friends I've ever had, to presenting personal challenges that have helped me grow as an athlete and as a person.

I'm stronger, wiser, and dumber, all because of triathlon.

I think exercise in general makes a person happier, not triathlon specifically.  Not just any exercise but strenous cardio exercise seems to reduce stress and helps you cope with other problems.  I enjoy the sport, but I have to credit my well being to the exercise it brings.

I really enjoy training, thinking about and racing triathlons. Training requires me to be more intentional about my life and since I am taking so much time training, I need to be more focused in other areas as well. That focus for me has really allowed me to be grateful and enjoy the people in my life more. I'm feeling much more content and happy and feel really good about things.

Well, I've done them since 1984, on and off. I'm far happier when I can do them than when I can't...

And if it weren't for triathlon (and BT!) I wouldn't have met my wife.

I agree with the sentiments that exercise and being physically active in general contribute to health and happiness, not just triathlon specifically.

There are certainly other aspects of life that are equally, if not more important to happiness.  In no particular order:  family, relationships, faith, finances, and one's general health are all important.

Before I blew out my elbow I  had been an avid tennis player for most of my life.  Now I do triathlons, in large part because I enjoy the cross-training aspect of the sport.

I have more hobbies and interests than I have time for.  If something happened tomorrow where I could no longer do triathlons I'd still be happy, but just doing other stuff.

YES YES YES.  much happier.  Coming from where I have been the past few years (Which wasn't even bad compared to some).  Triathlon, specifically training for a triathlon, has made me healthier, happier, more conscious of my surroundings, and most of all it has helped my mental state.  Addiction is no laughing matter, and this seems to be just the right treatment for me..

I haven't done my first tri yet (June!) but I can say that the training has helped me to drop weight, look slimmer, increase my endurance, and allowed me to enjoy more that life has to offer.  So yes, I am happier.

Kinda...

There is a bit of chicken/egg in the mix.  Am I happier because I do triathlons?  That's probably a stretch, but I do get a kick out of people trying to understand the things I do (including triathlons).  Or...had I turned the "happy corner" and was willing to take a risk by signing up for a triathlon?

I think overall mentally I'm much happier. Endurance training has really helped with my depression and anxiety issues. However, I have been battling the stress of getting the training in lately. At times the training seems like a burden, but I ALWAYS feel better afterward.

YES!!!!  I love this sport!  I love the variety and I love the discipline/structure of training.  I spent 2+ years unable to race or train much and it wasn't fun.  Now that I've been able to train consistantly now for almost a year I am so much happier!  Being able to be active just makes me happier all around.

Its not just mental, its human physiology working on the brain.  Exercise and even more so, endurance exercise releases hormones (those that generally effect happiness), creates lots of positive changes in nerve pathways, blood flow, lean body composition (which effects so many feelings of happiness) etc.

The pshycological benefits are numberous too.  Accomplishment, pride, confidence, self sufficiency, determination, etc.

Then there is the phyisical benefits.... which there are tons.

Exercise... best med out there.

Yes! I am in the best shape of my life now at 35yo. I have not been this fit since i stopped stripping in the clubs in my 20's. I have more focus and determination and energy since i started training.

I could not be happier!!
