So in the other forum, there was a thread titled "Endurance Entertainment" and I thought it was going to be about how to keep yourself entertained while training---

I run with a group of people in the morning and we occasionally do silly things like race each other to the corner and stuff like that. Last week, one of the runners decided that Wednesday would be "Truth or Dare Day" so now we play Truth or Dare while we run one day a week. I'm wondering if laughing until you cry qualifies as extra aerobic benefit to the run?

Anyway, do any of you play games while you train?

Michele

Other than the typical math problems (calculating pace, distance, etc.), I pray.  Specifically:  Lord, thank you for the ability to train for triathlons, the health to swim, bike and run, and for everything else that you've helped me accomplish.  Amen.

And then I blow it by checking out which of the moms at the playground are cute...

The truth or dare idea is GREAT!!! On runs for rowing we used to play "Questions" (ask the weirdest question ever and answer) or "never have I ever". Never have I ever was fun...you line up indian run style (straight line) and the person at the front of the line says something like, "Never have I ever slept with a male rower". If you have, you had to sprint to the front of the line. If more than one person had, they both take turns at the front.

Truth or Dare is cool! Ipods are a must. When I was still doing the academic portion of my education, I would go go through all my anatomy, kinesiology, ortho tests, etc. I know...nerd!

Yeah without music I don't think I'd be able to run more than three miles at a time.

I have my iPod, but I like to sing "fat bottomed girls" to myself and think that my butt is getting smaller the faster/longer I go.

I run alone and have stopped taking music along as well...I have found that we are constantly bombarded by outside stimuli (man-made) in our society today and running is a great way (for me) to "get away" from that excess. I have seen how I do not need anything but my heart and mind to continue to motivate myself to excel. Although I would take my fiance's Ipod if she would let me...but I really do enjoy running without anything.

I run alone now, without anything- sort of meditation for me withthe rhythm of the run and stuff.

BUT- when I ran track in school, three of us girls used to get behind a couple of the guys who had nice rears and we would make up army chants about the nice scenery (we chanted them sort of quitely amongst ourselves so the boys wouldn't hear). Stuff like:

I don't know but I been told

I don't know but I been told

(Insert boy's name)'s butt is made of gold

You get the picture..... but we got as creative and goofy as we could....

Since I read chi-running - nothing. Just focus on my form. In fact, when I see people ask how to get faster the first thing I think of is ditch the mp3. Just like people talking on the cell and driving, they sure as hell aren't concentrating on the driving!

Really?  I usually run significantly faster when I'm cruisin to the tunes.

I don't run with anything either. I don't want to get dependent on it, plus I absolutely hate having stuff on me when I run; I even hated carrying the baton in relays in high school, hence my extreme hatred of fuel belts, etc., but I've got to start working on that if I want to do ultra runs, gotta maintain fluids. My thoughts and making sure I'm maintaining my HR keep me going. It's funny though, so many people ask me what I think about during a long run or something and I honestly can't tell them, it's weird that I really don't remember what all was going on in my head. In high school I loved cross country because I would just go out and run, but in track I would literally go insane because I knew what every split needed to be and if I was a second off I would start thinking about what I needed to do to gain it back...I was constantly calculating in my head. Track just wasn't near as relaxing.

Yeah, I'm so focused on my form and the path ahead of me, I hardly notice anything else.  I like the rhythm of my feet and my breathing.  My thoughs come and go and sometimes I'm surprised at how far I've gone without realizing it.  Not to say I'm zoned out.  I'm aware of traffic and other people on the sidewalk.  I think of it as a kind of active meditation.  I always bring my thoughts back to my breathing and my body, though.

Sometimes I like to focus on the people I see when I'm out there.  I try to imagine what their life is like now, what their past was like, etc.  So often we see people and just see them in that particular moment, so when I actually give some thought to who they could be, who is waiting for them at home, etc. it's kind of nice.

I miss all that when I've got my mp3 player going.  When I'm listening to music, I'm very much inside my own bubble and I lose that connection to the rest of the world around me.
