Subject: How windy is too windy?

I intend to go for a bike ride.  My husband insists it's not safe.  The wind is currently 30km/h (19mi) and gusting to 50km/h (31mi).  I figure I'm okay as long as I'm careful.

Who's right?

I've been out in what you are describing, and it's not all THAT bad.  Crosswinds are a bit scary, and the headwinds will suck...  I've found that if I don't ride when it's windy, then I don't ride at all because it's been windy all the time!

If it were me, I'd go for it... if it's TOO windy for you, cut it short and come on home....

I regularly ride in winds as high as 35mph (56 kph), but I'm not comfortable in winds faster than that yet. I think it's mostly a matter of how comfortable YOU are with the conditions. I've seen folks ride in winds over 60mph (96 kph?) but I won't at this point.

If you're good with the wind, go for it. The gusts are more of a problem than the sustained wind.

Admittedly, I have only been out on my road bike about half a dozen times.  Having said that, I live in a windy place.  It is always windy here.  Right now, just a bit more then usual.

Maybe I'll run today and bike tomorrow to appease my husband so that he doesn't worry too much.

Where I live it's often 30kph with gust up to 50. It's not unusual at all. I'm just getting some confidence on my bike and have only been out 3 times this season so far (because it's still been winter until the last month) and each ride was in conditions like you described. Last week we were definitely leaning into the side wind and it was a strange feeling! But, if I can do it (a complete newbie) you can do it.

Here in KS its routinely in the 20-30 mph range I ride in those conditions without problems and I offer a big target. I've been hit from the side with what felt like 40 mph gusts so for that reason I stay a few feet from the curb/ditch etc. The main drag is when you're riding INTO 30 mph headwinds, hard work!

Give it a shot if you'll be riding where there is light traffic, as you're going to want more room in the lanes than normal for the gusts.

Worst case, you turn around and head home.

I live in Oklahoma (ya know, where the wind comes sweepin' down the plain?). It's pretty much always windy here. And I hate it. But at some point, you get used to it. The gusts can really stink and catch you off guard, especially if you live in a flat place where there is nothing to block it, and it changes direction quickly. My strategy is to relax, throw it into granny gear if I need to, and not to grip my bars so tight that I overcorrect.

x2 in Kansas and Oklahoma 19mpn is not considered windy in the least - perspective I suppose.
I draw the line at more than 30mph sustained winds - this usually means gusts in the 50mph range.
A few weeks ago there was a recording of 70mph gusts in my city.

I did a century (100 mile) charity ride a few years ago with 30mph sustained winds, gusts around 45mph and I will never complain about winds again. Ever.

I think it depends on the road/traffic conditions as well as your handling skills.  The main objective is for you to stay safe.  Wider roads, less traffic, and better handling skills can make riding in 50 mph winds doable.  At the same time, riding in a one lane each way, no shoulder, high traffic area in 20 mph winds can be dangerous for even the most seasoned biker simply because cars will make aggressive attempts to pass you...especially if you're struggling to keep speed into the wind.

If you can choose your route, just head into the winds on the way out and ride with the wind back home.

I'm with your hubby though...if the bike can wait until tomorrow, just do it when the wind is no concern.  Just my 2 cents.

It's been super windy here this spring, and I was avoiding it for a while, until I realized that if it's windy on race day and I'm not used to riding in the wind, I'm screwed.  So I don't think avoiding wind is a good strategy in the long term.

But x2 on the choosing a light traffic route/wide shoulder/bike lake/bike path.  I'm getting better at handling with practice but I almost took out a guy on a bike who was passing me when the wind gusted and I overcorrected.  Scared the crap out of me (I don't think he noticed) because I hadn't heard him come up behind me.  Giving him the benefit of the doubt and assuming I didn't hear his "on your left" over the wind, make sure if you're passing someone you really yell it and give more space than usual!

For me, though, gusts up to 40mph are too much.  I'm still not that good of a cyclist.

I was JUST thinking about that video again!  I have felt the wind grab my bike, but never pick it up sideways like that when holding it. Then again, those bikes are probably several pounds lighter than mine.

I stopped a ride several weeks back at about 40 miles into a 60 miler. It was windy when I left with the wind from my right, and I had some awesome splits with it behind me.  As I approached a windfarm and all the windmills were pointed over my shoulder I knew I was in trouble when I had to turn.

On the return trip into the wind I called it quits after a mile or two of sub 7mph.  Called in for a ride and met up with family a couple miles later. (And the darn wind eased up too, I probably could have made it back but I wasn't calling off the rescue once they were on the road...)

I went back the next weekend and finished it when it was slightly less windy.  The last 10 miles still blew big time though...

Supposed to have gusts to 93mph here in Salt Lake City tomorrow, I will be on the trainer.

Honestly I hate the wind and if it gets into the 30 range I'm probably not heading out.  I get blown all over the place with the constant crosswinds and I bike cause I like to have fun.  I don't find that enjoyable.  I can handle the head winds and of course bring on the tail winds but my route is typically 80% cross winds just by how the road is built.

But I remember once I was in Moab mountain biking and a storm came in.  I was at the top of a ridge line, off my bike waiting on some folks to come up the ridge so I could go down.  I was holding on to the bike by the handlebars, brakes on.  The back end of my bike picked up and started blowing in the wind.  Keep in mind this is a heavy mountain bike.  I walked down the ridge (there was no margin for error to start with).

For me the worst part about strong wind is the noise in your ears when riding straight into it.  If you're able to push 15 mph into a 30 mph wind, the sound of the wind rushing past is LOUD, and annoying.

I've had a couple close calls with a crosswind where it starts to feel like your wheels are going to come out from under you, but never went down.  It's a great opportunity to work on your handling.  If you feel uncomfortable/shaky in aero in the strong wind, just move into a more roadie position so you have more control over the bike.

We're getting those type of winds in Vegas now.  I don't go out if the crosswind gusts are getting up into the 30-35mph.  It's no fun and the dust really starts to kick up.  We've only had one really good dust up like that on a day when I was supposed to ride.
