Ok, just over a month until the race. Who is excited? who is ready? who is not ready?

I am in the excited but not ready category. I have been unable to get in the pool much over the last month and bike rides are only averageing 12-14 miles. Guess I better suck it up and get out there or that big hill is going to be my undoing.

Hope everyone else is excited and training hard.

I'll be there. Also leading a pre-ride for Richmond Multisports on the 11th and 18th and a pre-swim on the 18th. Spectated this the last two years but it just looks like so much fun and really suits my abilities well.

Dave,

Hope to see you out there for one the pre-rides/Swims. Congrats on the crushing bike split at the Powersprint. Maybe you can give us some tips on how to handle the big hill on the Tavern course.

Absolutely.  I will give every bit of information I have about how to get the best bike split out of your fitness, including riding "the beast".

Had a great pre-ride out there today.  Another one next Saturday and then the pre-swim has moved to the Friday before the race.

My advice for the hill: save some gears!  It gets steeper towards the top and I think a lot of people run out of easier gears too quickly and end up walking.

Did youall see the swim course changes to the inverted V?  Cross current both ways.  Yeah, I am such a craptastic swimmer even with current that this is going to suck!

Saw the course today but could not swim it due to too much boating traffic. I did the OWS Clinic with Jay Peluso and for safety reasons we just swam straight from the boat ramp to the Kayak entry. Not much current today. We will see what we get next Sunday.

That does not sound like a fun course.  I'm curious why they made that change.

I am guessing but since the development wouldn't let RMS use the boat landing further upstream the only choice for the swim start is where we are starting now. If we didn't have the V, the course would only be about 250m. I think that is kinda short for an ows sprint course especially when you consider that it is a downstream swim.

I wish we could go back to doing an out and back and use the new course only if there is a strong current.

I think your caps lock is stuck on.

Does sound like it was problems with one of the developers.  Frustrating from our perspective, although I guess I could understand from the homeowners'.  Hopefully there is not much of a current on race day.

FYI Tavern folks - I swam there last night.  The current was sick.  I swam upriver for 15 minutes and it took me 3 minutes to get back.  In a pool I can cover 600 meters in 15 minutes (ok, I'm no speed demon - I am a BEGINNER triathlete after all).  I probably moved forward about 200 last night.  So theoretically, I swam 600 meters and the current carried me back 400, which happens to be the length of the course.  So if I'm right, and the current is the same on Sunday, you'll be able to cover the course in 15 minutes simply by treading water and sitting still!

But it did just rain the night before, so it will likely settle down.

I just swam it twice today. Hardly any current.  This will likely change again before the race.

Regardless of what the current does, or how worked up you may get about the possibilities, the best thing to do if it worries you is to get to the race site early enough to at least look at the river. This is a short enough swim where actually swimmig the entire course beforehand would be a great idea. Or come to the pre-swim Friday at 6pm and we can talk about it and practice.

Currents are generally visible. The current will not be uniform from side to side. There will be a channel where it is stronger somewhere in the middle. It will barely be moving along the banks.

I've been planning to do this for awhile. Then I got pregnant (yay) but got floored with terrible morning sickness for the last two weeks. Today is the first day I've done any workout in two weeks. I thought I could transfer my registration to my husband, but I didn't read carefully. Turns out now I'm stuck. So I'm going to change my category to aquabike and just be resigned to doing it slowly. In any case, it should be fun!! Any more bike course tips??

Rebecca

On the bright side, not many people do aquabike, so you've got better odds of placing ;-)

On the bike course, pace yourself going up, the hill is its steepest right before the turnaround.  I think you'll know when you're there.  The steep part is tough, but it's not terribly long.  After that it's a short flat section (maybe a quarter mile?), then you get to turn around and fly!
