Age Group Rank = 1/13
Pre-race routine:

Up way too early. Had the truck packed the night before so Tony and I grabbed the kids and poured them into their seats. I ate some oatmeal and coffee.
Event warmup:

Drew and I rode our bikes over to packet pickup and then transition. It was fun having my little guy there racing. We got body marked then set up our areas.

Not much warmup because it was a pool swim and I was 100th to start. I had to run back to transition to get my race number for my timing chip. So that got the blood flowing.

Comments:

What can I say. I predicted 7:30 in the pool and that is exactly what I did then 15 sec to get out of the pool and cross the mats.

I can say - it is so DAMN frustrating to continue this slow year after year. It makes me wonder if there is any hope of getting faster. Although I have spent hours upon hours in the pool, I have spent quality time in the pool. Lots of stroke clinics at Masters. My technique has improved but obviously not enough to go faster.
What would you do differently?:

Who the hell knows! Water wings, flippers, ???
Transition 1
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Very happy w/ my transitions. It was a decent jog to my rack and I kept a good pace up. Got everything on quickly and hit the road.

Comments:

Well another thing I had spot on in my pre-race assessment of my current tri fitness. I had barely been on my new bike or any bike over the past month. I knew this was going to hurt even on such a short course. I gave it my all and was definitely faster on the first half. I just need more time on my bike to get in better bike shape.

Some positives: loved my new bike. It felt great and handled really well. I was able to ride in aero most of the time, cornered super well and shifted w/ no problems. I feel bad that I let my bike down.
What would you do differently?:

More bike miles
Transition 2
  • 00m 38s
Comments:

Another great transition. John would be so proud. ;-)

Run
  • 24m 38s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Super pleased w/ the run. This is where I have been putting in the miles so I thought I could put in a decent run off the bike even if I did cook my legs. My goal was under 25min. It took me a mile or so to get the breathing under control then I settled into a nice rhythm. I would have had an even faster run if so much of the course was not uphill on the second half.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and got a little food and something to drink. Then I hustled back over to the transition area to watch Drew's race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of tri training. I should have been a lot faster on the bike.

Event comments:

Great local race. Lots of volunteers. I highly recommend this race to anyone. The snake swim went smoothly. The bike course was well manned especially for all of the turns. The kids race was fabulous. There were 155 kids racing - 2 more than the adult race. A wonderful family event.

Great job Sam!  Winning your AG is a huge accomplishment.

PS when you figure out how to translate great swimming technique into speed send me the formula.  I'm right there with you!

Great race Sam. Congrats on the AG win.

Great race, Sam!  Congrats on the AG win!  I gotta think you'll lose more time trying to run to T1 in flippers than you might save in the water, and those wings are gonna slow you down on the bike and run.
