Pre-race routine:

Got all my stuff together in the morning, since my wave didn't start until 8:40. I should have gotten it together yesterday, but I wasn't even sure that I was going to race until this morning.
Event warmup:

Stretched for about 10 minutes, then jumped in the pool when my wave was called. I think I maybe got 10 yards of a warmup in.
Swim
  • 11m 57s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was first one in my wave, and probably could've held that position through the whole swim, except for my bronchitis. I did fine for the first 200 meters or so, and then my pace REALLY dropped off. I didn't hyperventilate or anything, but I just could NOT get enough oxygen into me. This would be a recurring theme all day.
What would you do differently?:

Not have bronchitis the week before a race!
Transition 1
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

This race draws a lot of first timers each year, and a few returners. The TA is in the parking lot, as is the rest of the tri/du exhibits, thereby making the TA very crowded. I hoped for a slightly faster T1 time, but got stuck behind a couple of noobs and couldn't run around them to the exit. As such, I also had issues getting started on the hill out of the parking lot, as neither noob could get clipped in and started.
What would you do differently?:

Machine gun the bozos slowing me down?
Bike
  • 47m 11s
  • 15 miles
  • 19.07 mile/hr
Comments:

I did fairly well on the bike, even though I again could NOT get enough oxygen into me. My breathing was much higher than in training, and my HR was higher as well.

Other than that, the biggest problem was the noobs again. People - STAY TO THE RIGHT UNLESS YOU ARE PASSING SOMEONE!
What would you do differently?:

Again, machine gun the people blocking the way.
Transition 2
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Wow - at least I was consistent on my transitions. I neglected to use my inhaler before the bike, and my lungs were on fire by this time. I racked my bike OVER someone else's bike (once again, the noobs had no idea no to rack a bike and leave room for others), grabbed everything I needed, and took a couple quick puffs from the inhaler.
What would you do differently?:

Again, not contract bronchitis the week before a race.
Run
  • 46m 15s
  • 4.5 miles
  • 10m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

I've run this before, but I didn't suffer like today. My lungs were on fire from the bike, and I could NOT control my breathing very well. My HR was over 161 for most of the run (should've been below 158!) I was passed by only a handful of people, but I was on the verge of running the majority of the route anaerobically.
What would you do differently?:

Bronchitis again...
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

My freaking BRONCHITIS!

Event comments:

Overall, this is a fairly decent race. I personally think the run portion is a bit too long (the duathlon run is 5K - why can't the tri be 5K?), but I like that hill. The post race activities are ok, could be a little better (really now, DISCO music at the finish line?) I'll most likely do this race again next year, as it's so close to me, and I can get a good judgement over my previous race(s) here.

The ONE guy that I really wanted to see this year didn't even sign up.  That guy whose mom derided my effort last year.  I would've been pretty close to him on the bike...even while sick...

Great race, Joe, even despite the sickness. Sorry about all the noobs that got in your way!! You've definitely had your share of hardships this season. Recover well and get ready to rock Fall Frenzy.

Hey JR!  You rock to be able to race at all buddy!  I am totally impressed

It seems like viruses are year round now instead of during the off season... that bites big time.

The noobs need to read the basic rules....I hate it when people are blocking on the bike.  I am proud to say I never did that during my first races!! I had my fair share of noobs at my race yesterday too...read my RR for a good laugh

Way to go, Joe.   Get better so you can REALLY blow everyone away!  You STILL did great...imagine how well you would've done if you COULD breathe!
